5 Reasons to Love Leonardo DiCaprio that Have Nothing to do With his Acting Career

(ANTIMEDIA) On Sunday evening, the internet rejoiced as Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Academy Award after years of repeated snubs. DiCaprio used the widespread publicity surrounding his victory to discuss the environmental perils currently facing the planet, but his dedication to activism goes much deeper than a brief speech.

Here are five reasons to celebrate Leo that have nothing to do with his acting. Or his dimples. Or his smile. Or his eyes. Or his performance as Jack Dawson.

1. DiCaprio cares about the environment: His Oscars acceptance speech may be receiving a high volume of press and exposure this week, but DiCaprio has worked on behalf of the environment for years. In 2014, he participated in a global protest to demand action on climate change, and around the same time, was appointed a U.N. representative on the matter. Though some have challenged the legitimacy and viability of his statements and proposed strategies, his compassionate and well-intentioned objectives are indisputable. His foundation has committed millions of dollars to helping combat Earth’s increasing maladies. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation supports projects in nearly every area of the planet that range from protecting the coral reefs to curbing deforestation in rainforests around the world.

2. He cares about indigenous people (and others): For centuries, indigenous people around the world have been pillaged, lied to, exploited, and murdered by expansionist, greedy governments and their cohorts. DiCaprio has used his last two award speeches to draw attention to this plight. When he accepted his award for ‘Best Actor’ at the Golden Globes in January, he said, “I want to share this award with all the First Nations people represented in this film and all the indigenous communities around the world.”

He continued:

It is time that we recognized your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and people that are out there to exploit them. It is time that we heard your voice and protected this planet for future generations.”

Though a critique of the governments that have routinely abused indigenous populations was noticeably absent from this acknowledgment, it is rare to see any Hollywood actor speak out on behalf of indigenous people. He also mentioned indigenous rights in his Sunday Oscars acceptance speech.

Further, his foundation supports projects directly intended to help Natives, including protecting their land in the Amazon, funding a solar micro grid for the community of Mugarameno, Zambia, and raising awareness about and preserving Native cultures. He personally donated $1 million in 2010 to help victims of the massive earthquake in Haiti. His foundation also assists non-indigenous people, as well, helping to build community gardens and teach job skills with the Growing Justice Institute in Oakland, California. He has also personally donated to the Pediatric Epilepsy Project.

3. Leo helps animals: In addition to his highly-publicized action to protect the planet as a whole, DiCaprio is strongly committed to helping animal populations, in particular. His foundation supports projects and initiatives that protect wolves, sharks, elephants, snow leopards, tigers, rhinos, gorillas, jaguars, sea lions, stingrays, arctic marine life, and marine life in the Pacific Remote Islands. In 2010, he personally donated $1 million to the Wildlife Conservation Society to help endangered tigers, and he has also provided funds to other various wildlife foundations.

4. He puts more than just his money where his mouth is: While some may discount DiCaprio’s widespread efforts as simply throwing money at problems, he strives to live his life in a way that upholds his principles. Last year, DiCaprio committed to divesting his own personal finances — and those of his foundation — from the oil industry. Instead, he vowed to invest in sustainable alternatives. He owns a Tesla electric car, and has helped the company gain notoriety. He has also owned a Prius, as well as a Fisker, a hybrid car produced in Finland (admittedly, it was recalled in 2012 for safety reasons). In 2015, he bought an island near Belize and is now working to heal its coastline and develop a sustainable, eco-friendly tourist resort.

5. He supports using film to change the world: While DiCaprio’s acting throughout the years has been legendary, he uses that influence to make changes behind the scenes. DiCaprio recently served as an executive producer on a Netflix special edition of the documentary, Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, which details the devastating effects of animal agriculture on the environment. He also supports charities that seek to improve the film industry, both externally and internally; DiCaprio has donated to Cinema for Peace, which aims to “promote peace and international understanding through the medium of film.” He has contributed to charities that aim to preserve cinema as a medium of communication, as well as help workers within that industry.

DiCaprio’s activism is not without flaws. Though in 2007 he expressed a commitment to avoiding private jets — and defended Al Gore for failing to do so — he still faces criticism for flying on them. Further, though DiCaprio supports film that promotes peace, he donated to Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns in both 2008 and 2012, leaving many wondering if he is aware of the crimes against humanity the president has committed and the human rights violations his administration has sanctioned. Further, though it’s likely Leo supports him for the actions he has taken to address climate change, the president’s measures arguably do far too little to curb one of the world’s biggest polluters: the United States Department of Defense, which Obama has sought to bolster with a massive update to the nation’s nuclear arsenal — even though scientists have warned nuclear weapons are “the greatest environmental danger to the planet from humans, not global warming or ozone depletion.”

In spite of Leo’s shortcomings, few Hollywood celebrities use their fame to spread the increasingly vital message of protecting the environment, wildlife, and humanity. Even if some elements of the actor’s activism may be misguided, he is leaps and bounds beyond typical celebrity consciousness; namely, he cares. As DiCaprio said in his Sunday evening acceptance speech:

For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so very much.”

  2. Leo is concerned about the planet agreed.. But he thinks the UN agenda is about the climate .. It is not ! It is about global governing. There is a difference between pollution and holding corporate people responsible, than taxing People for imaginary carbon .. I love him anyway. His intent is good .. I believe .. But he needs to read the agenda 21 and 2030 scripts .

  3. Maybe leo donated money to Barack Obama because maybe he was scared of assasination for trying to save the world.. it happens a lot..

  4. I believe he is another Hollywood liberal that they control .. So many of them ..

  5. Yes .. The more he talks it is evident that he is pushing climate lies . If he was sincere he would be attacking geoengineering !

  6. I totally feel you. Each single life is valueable and how the world works is still medieval.. I don't think leo isn't aware of greed, but if I would stand there I would say with a smile that people are living like zombies, because they think this how the world works. But hey.. I get depressed sometimes because of this.. but the truth conquers lies and that gives me hope

  7. Samilya Saberhagen indeed , never give up ! I was surprised thT this site is pushing climate change garb for the UN . I know they are committed to cleaning up the earth .. But that is exactly how the UN is pulling people in .. Under the guise of climate change all these years . It is more to do with large corporations and pollution . Ask well as the military using geoengineering and chem trails . It has been proven , 90 scientists that there has been less than a degree of climate warming ..
Agenda is about global control over people . Spying and charging them for everything , taking land rights .. Etc etc .. The e torsion of private property of number one item on the communist manifesto ..
Attaining property rights and protecting them is number one in the US constitution . We can see this is clearly an agenda in disguise now . The elite are desperate .. So they use Leo ..

  8. My best friend who died was an american who lived nearby my house here in the netherlands. He told me "The world is a crazy house and this is the office". it's a saying in dutch. When you are in a room discussing the world with friends and family this saying really shows how people are feeling against the world. But hey what can we do? We can wait.. till there's someone that makes a change.. I don't know I really don't feel like waiting on that other person, but it feels good to bitch about it on the internet. Im not sarcastic… all my 'friends' look weird in my eyes when I try to open their eyes.. And think im crazy when I say that democracy is a joke. Response: you shouldn't vote then! my response: like your vote is going to make the difference YOU want to see in the world! .. silence.. and then they tell what the government does.. I say I dont fucking care what they discuss, You can never ever have a say in what they want.. No one wanted to have euros as money.. my mum still calculates back from 1999 and the inflation shocks me every single time. People don't even notice.. 6 years ago I could live from 35 euros a week having brandfood and now I have to spend 60 euros a week and no one makes a fuss that we are being raped in our wallet.

  9. Samilya Saberhagen That is the point .. Letting others run things for you is suicide . We may have been infiltrated by the banks and DC taken over , this happened to many countries .. Our forefathers saw this in Europe , that is why they made us a republic .. A republic is run by the people . Our government is supposed to serve us .. Along the way , they have slowly taken power secretly That is illegal . I do not know about the constitution in your country . I do know that the away is basically a socialist organization . That is exactly what US people are waking up to .. Opening our borders and trying to make a North American Union will start a civil war here ..
Having a government by the people requires participation to paraphrase Thomas Jefferson .
Letting someone else do the job or hoping a politician will
Solve it is not the answer . They cannot be trusted anymore since the elite have taken hold of all of our governments . If you do not take a stand .. The UN will proceed with their communist plans .
Great to talk with you . Hang in there !

  10. Mary Carmel Lol.. so they use leo.. lol
I don't know the truth about leo, but what you say could be true. That's the hard part in the world I feel.. what is the truth? I have personal questions that no one can answer. Its driving me mad sometimes.. you read an article and you aren't sure if that is the truth.. like you read about benefits of sleeping less with facts from scientist and then you read an article about sleeping that is the total opposite! What is the truth?

Im sceptic and I totally feel there are problems in this world.. I felt that when I was 1 or 2 years old. I told my mum I wanted to die because I wanted to go to a different world. I still carry this feeling. Ive been brought up with the thought; there is something wrong with sam.. in her head.. not thinking that the world is wrong.. you cant imagine how many fucking labels ive got! And mindfucking pills to make you a living zombie! And it fucks in your head what people tell you what you are..
And when you tell someone you have autism they will look at you like they are seeing the circus from films about autism and if I never tell they will never notice. Someone with autisme has idk a different brain! and thats why half of the cia has autism! the whole system fucks you up. When you have autism this happens what they brainwash in your selfesteem: people with autisme are limited.
WTF?! and all the people I know with autism believe! My boyfriend perfect example. I ask why he doesnt dream about any life he want.. he comes up with excuses that comes out the autism textbook like; Im uncomfortable around strangers because of my autism. I say; bullshit. There are a lot of people that are afraid of change.

I could have been so much more if they wouldnt treat me like they did. I mean, I was ahead of development when I was 4 and I was 'high gifted'.. if it would be my kid I would educate her myself and say fuck the system.

People always blabber about worldcontrol and climate change, i get that, but I feel that there are urgent problems in 'my own' country. It would be more realistic to make a change where you live. I cant get to the topleader of the world. I mean I would delete the current policy of institutions in holland. why? this is how 'mental hospital' works in holland; People feel that they want to commit suicide, want help, goes to hospital, take pills and then that person feels lost because there is no help what he or she needs.I have known poverty as well and if I could fix the problem with the first step making a law that makes it forbidden for grocerystores to throw food away and have to donate to the poor. Why hasn't the government of holland thought of this? well I can go on and on.. I was also depressed and crying about the world.. its not only the government and people.. its nature and animals too.. when I cycle I dont look around to buildings, but to trees and the sky. And when I watch a movie about civil war where alot of people die.. i cry about the horses.. i dont know.. i just care much about animals because my best friends in life were my dogs. Humans can learn a lot from animals by just looking how they would feel to be caged in a zoo for the rest of your life. Or that your entire family is gone, because you are only syberian tiger left.. When I was bullied at school, my dog was my only friend to come to, no one else. Ive encountered other animals too, like cats, horses, donkeys, but I feel the birdkind is scary.

I havent slept for days.. i dont have a life people would say.. because i dont work.. i dont have diploma.. and that did get to me.. but my mum said that it is a gift to have lots of life experience at young age.. it means that 'they' still have to experience what ive been through. Im still healing.. I have no fucking clue why I post this on the internet, but it felt nice.. to be open.. more people should do that.. but people are scared of people

  11. Samilya Saberhagen you keep going .. Read read read .. Yes they are using Leo . Those that have done their research KNOW this ..
You have to use that instinct and knowledge that you have and do not let them get you down .. We are all fighting , they are attacking humanity itself .. For their own gain … This plan goes way back .. We have a geoengineering problem that is not being done by the people . Just add it up .. Read the Iron mountain documents .. Agenda 2030. Aka Agenda 21 are extensions of the iron mountain plans for global government … So they wrapped it up in one issue that the work would buy ! Saving the earth … Yes we need to save the earth .. For everyone .. What they are doing is saving it for them .. At the cost of humanity , Liberty .. Etc . With a science that has been debunked .. We have a pollution problem , and they add to it with spraying the skies .weather manipulation weapons .. Corporate oil spills etc . I am sorry that big pharma has had to have such an impact in your life .. You take care of yourself … Do not let it depress you , I can see you are superior in your thought and it has given you the strength to survive it all … Take that and give yourself the credit for the sensitive and smart person you are . Run with it and remember we are all in this together . I have one dear to me that has autism from their damn vaccines .. Many are living with the effects of their crimes against us . The world if in a major awakening . We will see hard times , but a renaissance afterward !

  13. He could go one step further and go vegan…That would help in some way too. Caring about animals and then exploiting them is kinda contradictory.

  14. Mary Carmel I thought about what you said today.. and I couldnt help thinking that your message about the truth is nothing more than repeating 'truth' news. It is the same way how someone would sum up the news on tv. And when I read your message again I wonder if you believe in the power of love. I accept the fact that people think in a way corporates wants you to think. I don't feel like read read read about the doom of society. That is hypocrite when you tell you don't believe the news on tv but you do believe every article about the doom on the internet. And I dont want to read read read stuff that makes me feel down and powerless in the world, I mean, I could watch the news and I would feel the exact same way.

I see with my own mind that there will be a doom, but I don't need to read about it. Ive known it since I was a child and no one told me about it. It is a feeling I have been carrying with me my whole life. Im confused by 'the truth' or 'the matrix'. You divide yourself instead of thinking that we all are one, that we all are stardust and if every baby that has been born with unconditional love there wouldnt be a doom.. If you ask people what unconditional love is people would have to think really hard in the box because they have grown in this world like you. Unconditional or true love is giving without expecting. And if you would have the power of unconditional or true love, it isn't your husband. It is you. Who smiles to every busdriver, talks about the weather to a drifter (you dont need to give them money, just love), say thank you to everything that makes you feel amazing. That is hard, being thankful. I thank a person when I enjoyed my time spending with them.. and the person.. feels.. love..

What would you choose as solution? Doomday that means end of economic system or… unconditional love?
Even when you choose for doomday.. will it solve the problem that has spread like a virus since the beginning of çulture in history? Greed is the founder of lacking love

I personally don't believe autism is the cause of vaccine.. why? Because I believe autism is a form of evolution. You can't describe autism by flaws. When you ask an expert of autism what autism is they will tell you that the only difference is that a person with autism perceives information in a different way in the brain and that isn't a flaw. This different way of brainthinking created one of the most popular persons you know from the world; Einstein. And there are many many many others with autism who changed a perspective of life. You might even came across articles about a boy who has autism and a bigger IQ than Einstein and then you won't think that it's because of the vaccine that created autism, no. I think people with high IQ are mostly people with autism. Autism even has a special IQ group called 'asperger'.
When you would really understand autism, you wouldn't say it is a vaccine. I have also came across the article about the vaccine in 2012 but it was documented at a date long before Einstein was born.
I can say that I am an expert of autism, because I can say I have a lot of experience with people with autism and above all myself. I have a lot of friends with autism. And it is really a small group of people that I know who has trouble functioning in society because society isn't social to them.
And if you would meet people with autism like my friends, you would think my friends are awesome and you are glad the vaccine happened. I mean if you really think the conspiracyway and I would filosofy for you. 'Vaccine cause of autism' is the title of the article you read and when you see the title you believe.. and it is written by the corrupt government to let you think that autism is a flaw of the human mind.
I would believe that, because many people with autism feel terrorised by the idea that autism is flawed and most of them accept they are permanently flawed for life..
See that is how control works

When the doom day appears where will you run too? Do you have a plan or do you only repeat what other people tell you?
I joke sometimes about doomday.. that the people with autism are the survival of the fittest because the 'normal' breans runs like sheep and the autism brain perceives details in a way that they think it's important and surive.
It is true when you show me a picture I can tell you a LOT of details. You will see a picture of a clock, nothing more. I see a white wall with a shadow that is shaped like a crocodile, that it's 11:11 and I can tell the brandname of the clock.. but as autismbrain I cant see the big picture and I just dont see JUST a clock… is see everything.
Can you imagine a brain perceiving these details? According to autism, you need autism to see great detail.

I don't know.. you bitch about the doom of the world.. because there isn't love.. and do you smile to every busdriver? I do!

To decide to become vegan is a choice but if you're not prepared and your entire mind and body are not ready , the effects can be negative…Maybe he will, in fact there is a lot of probability he becomes vegan (sorry for my english)

  18. Laurent Dessaints I feel like a hypocrite vegan. I can't stand the sight of a dead animal to eat, like a turkey, I get sick. But when I buy minced meat packaged I have no problem at all because it doesn't look like an animal. I feel I want to be vegan someday, but like you said it isn't an easy step and I want to try veganmeat, who knows it might taste good.
