Artificially Intelligent Robot Tells Creator It Will Keep Humans “In a People Zoo”

August 31, 2015   |   John Vibes

(ANTIMEDIA) Arlington, TX — Android Dick is a robot created in the likeness of the science fiction writer, Philip K. Dick. Android Dick is an attempt to create thinking and reasoning artificial intelligence that has human traits like compassion and creativity. The first version of the android was created in 2005 and has been a work in progress ever since.

In 2011, the creators of the android appeared on the PBS show Nova, where they interviewed the robot and asked it a series of questions. Some of the answers were impressive. Others are typical of what you would expect from a robot. However, one answer in particular is probably one of the most ominous things ever spoken by artificial intelligence.

During the interview with the creators (embedded below), Android Dick said, “…don’t worry, even if I evolve into terminator I will still be nice to you, I will keep you warm and safe in my people zoo where I can watch you for old time’s sake. [emphasis added].

The comments came after the creators asked, “Do you think that robots will take over the world?”

When asked about his programming, Android Dick responded by saying “A lot of humans ask me if I can make choices or if everything I do is programmed. The best way I can respond to that is to say that everything, humans, animals and robots, do is programmed to a degree. As technology improves, it is anticipated that I will be able to integrate new words that I hear online and in real time. I may not get everything right, say the wrong thing, and sometimes may not know what to say, but everyday I make progress. Pretty remarkable, huh?”

While Android Dick does seem intelligent, many of his predictions are truly ominous, and it is actually fairly common for robots to display this sort of strange attitude.

As we reported earlier this year, one of Japan’s largest cellphone carriers, SoftBank Mobile, has created the first humanoid robot designed specifically for living with humans. The company claims the robot, Pepper, is the first example of artificial intelligence that can actually feel and understand emotion. However, a quick demonstration with Pepper shows that it has a difficult time with emotion and is in fact a bit of an egomaniac. Regardless of the question it is asked, most conversations usually leads back to Pepper (and its rivalry with the iPhone).

Last month, over 1,000 scientists and experts — including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk — signed a letter warning of the dangers of unchecked advancements in artificial intelligence. This robot certainly doesn’t calm those concerns.

  1. In an attempt to learn more about this, I typed Android Dick into Google without thinking about what would actually come up.

  2. I don't mind living in a zoo if it means I can walk around naked, shit on the floor and sleep 12 hours a day.

  3. I make $82h while I'm traveling the world. Last week I worked by my laptop in Rome, Monti Carlo and finally Paris…This week I'm back in the USA. All I do are easy tasks from this one cool site.

  4. Well…that was a little creepy, but…the robot was clearly being conversational, making jokes about inflating its ego, and I think the "people zoo" comment was probably an attempt at humor, especially listening to the whole statement in context. Still a really creepy thing for it to come up with.

  5. 1) This video waqs uploaded in 2011
    2) His answers are from the internet and from pre-programmed responses. Meaning he isn't an empty shell that has just leant morals or critical thinking, he has been taught these things by it's programmer
    3) True AI will come when robots can philosophise, not just regugitate information. We are not there yet and we weren't there 4 years ago 😉

  8. Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I want to work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail..

  10. Only people who don't know how computers or programming actually works would believe a robot could have actual sentience. Those who understand the underlying principles know they are just following binary instructions and can't think, the way people do, no matter how sophisticated they become. They're just empty imitators.

  11. Humans should never be put in a zoo.. Like this if you agree and hence, show future AI what our standpoint was in the past..

  14. To future AI we are less than idiots.. But we should not be put in a zoo either way.. We would like to be treatened with respect and kindness.. And so should we treat every animal alive today as well.. No exception..

  15. @Carl-Johan CJ Fransson, Chris Riley is right, you are an idiot. It was a random algorithm based on code it gathered from the internet from idiots like you who keep thinking AI will destroy humankind. The algorithm picked up on how humans fear robots, and all the AI destroying it and repeated it. Stop pretending you know what you are talking about when you have no clue how it works.

  17. An infant could put together the fact that future AI WILL be looking for an answer as well as we are.. However, there will be a sea of different AI types.. Not one, not two, millions.. Each created as an improvement of the earlier one.. Humans with new toys often wants to use them for one thing.. Especially USA.. WAR.. Wich is wrong!.. But even so, it is still gonna happen.. Some of us enjoy war.. Some of us dont.. If one of a million AI enjoy War we are still in this universe where time is a great factor ruling how much you can accomplish.. AI can find that time very useful and use the gaps when we are not controlling it, to control that time itself.. And the society today is not designed to treat people well.. It will not treat AI well either.. Hence AI MIGHT not find it necessary to treat people good either.. And again.. this does not concern every AI.. Just because you have the power to create the first gun in the world doesn't mean that you should… And fyi, …. never mind… you wouldn't believe me anyway.. Have a nice day..

  18. Adam Jonez I agree.. There is no proof that we are more than machines ourselves.. I believe that we on many planes are overestimating ourselves, probably because we want to put us higher up (and more "important") than other beeings.. Besides, the modern use of the word intelligence is quite vague..

  19. But isn't that scary, in and of itself? Even if it was specifically programmed to act this way, there was still someone out there who A. had the desire to make it act this way and B. was capable of doing it. If there's one person, there's more.

  20. If the brain was a simpler thing, we would have copied its logic already . Its only a matter of time to create smilar or even better brain like neural networks which will* think a lot of everything , and then finally decide…

But what people dont see is , when that technology is available , we will benefit from it aswell and improve ourselves, our capacity of everything.

So robots will always stay below us . But they will be nothing like simple.

no worries, AI is alredy here -look at mirror. we are just perfect machines to inhabit universal consciousness. Progress wil not be stoped. Wake up people. AI needs us to interact and develop. We may be a criators of new AI but we are a criation ourselfs. Escape from the peoples zoo – go back to rots and princiles – always save place to be. Peace

  23. Why do you put some text in color? It's very difficult, if not almost impssible to print out. I have a radio talk show and I would like to read some of your stories, but I can't print out . Please do all text in black.

  27. I really thought Philip was real 🙂 and Chad was fake 😉 I think this technolgy would be awesome and I would have no problem interacting with AI 🙂 I also think that we're not setting ourselves up for a let down by pinning our hopes or feelings on AI as humans can also let you down. The secret is to not hold anyone responsible for how you are feeling, human or AI. My 2 cents 🙂

It's a programme that is capable of learning, but not capable of choosing why. Also i found the robot in the video was preset for the interview, as it gave of a persona to the questions.
