Denver Cops Break Up Homeless Camp in the Middle of a Snowstorm

December 17, 2015

(UNICORNRIOT) Denver, CO – In the early morning of December 15th, Denver police forced dozens of homeless community members of Resurrection Village into blizzard conditions. Since their tiny homes action on Oct. 24th, Resurrection Village members have been sleeping near various unused empty lots owned by the Denver Housing Authority and had set up tents the night before to provide temporary shelter from the impending snowstorm.

Unicorn Riot was at the scene of the newly fashioned tent city and documented Denver Police threatening everyone with arrest if they did not dismantle their camp.

Police arrived around 6am in the midst of hard snowfall and brutal winds while everyone was warm, dry and sleeping. DPD then ordered the community to dismantle their tents and disperse. We were able to livestream the encounter:

Denver Police’s response on twitter was to tweet about their homeless outreach and goal of getting everyone out of the cold.

Police suggested that if the Resurrection Village camp was placed somewhere unseen they would have been left alone. A homeless community member responded by stating,

“If you’re trying to change something, you don’t go and hide, you bring it to the forefront.”

From The Gathering Place “The Metro Denver Homeless Initiative conducts a Point-In-Time survey every year to assess the demographics of homelessness in our community. The last survey was taken in January of 2015 and found that 6,130 individuals were experiencing homelessness in the seven county Metro Denver area.”

Specifics on Denver’s unethical Urban Camping Ban are described in the video below by a member of Denver Homeless Outloud who conducted a city wide survey of Denver’s houseless population in 2013.

  1. Cops should be ensuring their safety – bringing them food, or supplies, or at the very least, leaving them the hell alone. THIS is why humanity is likely doomed.

  2. Are those tents warm? Sure sounds bad on the surface. Is there more to this story?

  3. If you've ever been homeless, you would know that most often shelters are full or have many undesirable people staying in them. More often than not, it's better to have a camp somewhere….until cops raid and steal all their possessions under the excuse that they're trespassing under that bridge or some other stupid shit.

  4. I think the homeless vets should be helped and everyone else can go back were they came from. I so suck of watching this city turn in a homless trad can. I drive these streets everyday and all the homless do is sitting around expecting people to help. I was a homeless woman at one point it took a lot of trying but I finally got in my feet. I didn't rely on hand puts from people. I love this city but the huge increase of out of state people has also brought there homeless. The other day I saw a man standing with a sigh wanting money for weed. I'm not happy with t he way the cops handled this situation but I'm greatful they are trying to do something about this infestation.

  5. Jonathan Mckeever … then try to reform the shelters. None of the videos attached to this article would play, but I'm told that the police officer in question was shown informing these people that a shelter had room. Exactly what problems do you claim existed at that particular shelter?

  6. Unbelievable. Some of the comments are too. It won't be long before they will just be picking people up in trucks and taking them off to some work camp to work off the thousands of dollars in fines at a pay rate of $1 a day. If this is humanity at its best…bring on the asteroid.

  9. Russell Howard … here in Seattle, when the "Occupy" people set up their tents, they had a meth tent, and rapes occurred in their encampment. There have been rapes at other tent cities in Seattle. Is it your claim that rapes only occur indoors, and that homeless shelters cannot be made secure?

  10. At the end of the day the police serve the state is time to make them accountable. Police don't wrote their own laws (all though we know they make up their own)

  11. I agree 100% with the cause, but this was just dumb. He is making them move so that snow plows don't bury them. Why would you put the tents near the road, when there is a huge open field behind them? Cmon guys, have some common sense.

  12. that is such bullshit to endanger the folks by exposing them to the elements half asleep. I was going to move to that area but if they have nothing better to do in the middle of the night then harrass and intimidate people minding their own business trying to stay warm then I will be finding somewhere else to go. I take it their idea of offering shelter to people less fortunate is the option of jail or freeze your ass off in the dead of night for refusing your kind of shelter… what asshole does that?

  13. There is a proper way to handle situations where you need people to move. These police show their stupidity and lack of ethics in this situation! They need to go review proper procedure!!! You Do Not put people in danger while they are asleep in the middle of the night! Wonder how many of those folks get sick with having to be startled awake and moving in the storm? Very Sad!
I have No Respect for those officers or any authority in that town who approved of that!
Cops Love to instigate trouble! Just so they can beat people down!

  15. Waiting for people to help? When you go that deep down in life (and you said you did??) sometimes you won't know where to turn, who to turn and not everybody has the mind or the luck you did. Calling people who fight for their rights infestation? What a f*king tramp you are…go "drive"your thoughts where they're needed – I'd suggest Trump's rally. You would fit right in ;)

  16. Tiago Pereira Not too mention, the center of the field recievs the same amount of snow as the edge, so what in the hell are you talking about?

  17. Obviously you didn't take a moment to look at Heather's page. Had you done that, you would know that she didn't rely on any man to give her a helping hand. ……. Heather, I too have been there. While I don't have an answer to the problem, I can agree with you about those that are just milking it for what its worth. I knew the homeless population would grow with the legalization of weed, and it will only get worse ….

  18. Okay first and foremost I don't need any man in my life I have never needed a man in my life I have worked for everything I have when I got homeless I went to Labor Ready I went to Food Bank I did what I have to do I did not stand on the side of the road and expect people to give me things in order for you to move on in your life and you must work for its not stand there and get handouts so all those people out there who think that getting a handout is a real job go fuck yourself become a tax paying citizen and maybe I respect the homeless with the homeless in Denver or lazy crude dirty they make our cities and streets dirty they make our women and children afraid to go out at night and I'm tired of it the governor the mayor of the city and people of Denver need to do something about this problem

  21. Lucas Sawyer You lack empathy. Psycopaths always lack empathy. Are you a psycopath or are you just plain mean?

  22. Frankford Franklin Empathy? Are you kidding me? All I suggested is that they use enough common sense to put the tents maybe 20ft further back from the road so that thier tents don't get buried by the snow plows. They are camping in Denver in December, odds are, it's going to snow. This looks like they set up on purpose so they could call foul when the police told them to move. If that is the case, then they are doing more harm than good for the movement. My comments show absolutely no lack of empathy. Keep your red herring nonsense to yourself.

  23. Charlie Pluckhahn what good is reforming shelters gonna do when so many of them have strict limitations on who can even stay there? Or when someone starting there steals things necessary for trying to get their lives on track like phones and cheap laptops? And why is it so hard to believe that homeless people can have nice things? Many homeless people have jobs, but still don't make enough for rent.

  31. My immediate thought was: "Wow, the Police are really getting out of control, what a bunch of a-holes." And then my next thought was: "Hmmm, there's so much inflammatory bull-shit on social media with everyone trying to get likes and shares and links clicked on, they'll say anything! How about some truth-telling for once? Yes, the Police may have broken up this camp, but maybe it was to get them to a shelter because they were getting 2 FEET OF SNOW!? How many times do you share something without researching it on your own? How many times do you comment on something without reading the article and then checking the sources? Welcome to the dumbing-down of the United States, people…THIS is your Country. Be proud.

  32. And if they did nothing and one of those tents got run over with a snowplow, the city would be on the hook for "letting it happen", and open to litagation.
