Leonardo DiCaprio Pledges To Divest From Fossil Fuels

October 2, 2015

(ANONHQ) Leonardo DiCaprio has pledged to divest from his personal and Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation’s fossil fuel holdings and increase his investment in renewable energy companies to fight global warming. The actor recently invested in Rubicon Global, dubbed the garbage startup that specializes in on-demand trash hauling – a service that uses software to manage a network of independent waste haulers.

“Climate change is severely impacting the health of our planet and all of its inhabitants, and we must transition to a clean energy economy that does not rely on fossil fuels, the main driver of this global problem. After looking into the growing movement to divest from fossil fuels and invest in climate solutions, I was convinced to make the pledge on behalf of myself and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. Now is the time to divest and invest to let our world leaders know that we, as individuals and institutions, are taking action to address climate change, and we expect them to do their part this December in Paris at the UN climate talks,” United Nations Messenger of Peace for Climate Change, who joined members of the Divest-Invest Coalition in New York on September 22nd, said in a statement.

A total of 436 institutions (which include: local governments, health and education bodies representing more than 646 million people around the world) and 2,040 individuals across 43 countries, representing $2.6 trillion in assets, have committed to divest from fossil fuel companies.

The International Energy Agency estimates that $1 trillion a year of investment in clean technology is required to transition away from fossil fuels quickly enough to hold the temperature rise to 2°C. Global investments in renewable energy are currently at $300 billion a year. Given the trillions of dollars spent on exploring and producing fossil fuels each year, the challenge is not in finding new funds to finance this transition, but in reallocating global investments.
