Monsanto to Face Crimes Against Humanity Tribunal at International Criminal Court

(ANTIMEDIA) The Netherlands — On Thursday, dozens of farming, sustainable food, and environmental justice groups announced they would bring insidious agrichemical giant and food-experimenter, Monsanto, to trial before The Hague for charges of ecocide and crimes against humanity and nature. The tribunal will commence, appropriately, on World Food Day, which falls on October 16th of next year.

Millions Against Monsanto, The Organic Consumers Association (OCA), Regeneration International (RI), and The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) are among numerous organizations bringing this legal action in the form of a Citizens Tribunal, because “Monsanto, a US-based company, has developed a number of highly toxic products, which have permanently damaged the environment and caused illness or death for thousands of people.”

Announced in conjunction with the COP21 U.N. Conference on Climate Change — whose hotly controversial subject matter led to violent clashes between protesters and police in Paris, France — the massive lawsuit will be heard before the International Criminal Court (ICC) of The Hague, which was established in 2002. In part, the ICC must determine whether the behemoth corporation is guilty of ecocide, or crimes against the environment, for a number of chemicals whose widespread use persists in nature and continues to wreak havoc worldwide — even in cases where they have long been banned.

Those noxious chemicals include PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), which are one of twelve Persistent Organic Pollutants affecting fertility in humans and other animals; a dioxin component (2,4,5 T, or 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid) of infamous Agent Orange, a weaponized defoliant used during the Vietnam War that continues to cause cancers and birth defects yet is still employed for various purposes; Lasso, an herbicide now banned in Europe; and RoundUp, the most widely used insecticide cum herbicide on the planet, which is used in conjunction with genetically-modified RoundUp-Ready crops (soy, cotton, rapeseed, and others).

RoundUp’s primary ingredient, glyphosate, ominously received the World Health Organization’s classification of Group 2A probable carcinogen — an agent that “probably causes cancer” in humans, in the same category as toxins such as creosote — earlier this year. Because of its primary ingredient, widespread use of RoundUp has led to an 80% decline in monarch butterfly populations and has been theorized, though unproven, to have caused declines in populations of a number of other vital pollinators. The United States government somehow still considers the ubiquitous chemical ‘safe’ to be applied in massive quantities directly to crops consumed by both humans and the animals they eat. In fact, in 2013, Monsanto requested — and inexplicably received — an increase in the Environmental Protection Agency’s “tolerance levels” for the application of glyphosate. This means the likely cancer-causer is now applied more liberally to crops in the U.S. than ever — even as countries around the world implement immediate and complete bans and explicit labeling legislation for that exact probable carcinogen.

Ronnie Cummins, of OCA in the U.S. and member of the steering committee of RI, explained how crucially important this lawsuit is at a press conference:

“The time is long overdue for a global citizens’ tribunal to put Monsanto on trial for crimes against humanity and the environment. We are in Paris this month to address the most serious threat that humans have ever faced in our 100-200,000-year evolution — global warming and climate disruption. Why is there so much carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere, and not enough carbon organic matter in the soil? Corporate agribusiness, industrial forestry, the garbage and sewage industry, and agricultural biotechnology have literally killed the climate-stabilizing, carbon-sink capacity [anything that “absorbs more carbon than it releases”] of the Earth’s living soil.”

Marie Monique-Robin, author of The World According to Monsanto, which also became a best-selling documentary, said:

“This International Citizens’ Tribunal is necessary because the defense of the safety of the planet and the conditions of life on Earth [are] everyone’s concern. Only through a collective resurgence of all living forces will we stop the engine of destruction. That’s why, today, I am calling on all citizens of the world to participate in this exemplary tribunal.”

According to the website for the International Monsanto Tribunal In The Hague:

“Monsanto promotes an agroindustrial model that contributes at least one third of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions; it is also largely responsible for the depletion of soil and water resources, species extinction and declining biodiversity, and the displacement of millions of small farmers worldwide. This is a model that threatens peoples’ food sovereignty by patenting seeds and privatizing life.

“According to its critics, Monsanto is able to ignore the human and environmental damage caused by its products and maintain its devastating activities through a strategy of systemic concealment: by lobbying regulatory agencies and governments, by resorting to lying and corruption, by financing fraudulent scientific studies, by pressuring independent scientists, [and] by manipulating the press and media, etc. The history of Monsanto would thereby constitute a text-book case of impunity, benefiting transnational corporations and their executives, whose activities contribute to climate and biosphere crises and threaten the safety of the planet.”

  1. They actually are not facing any charges or being put on trial in the international Criminal Court. This is nothing more than a PR stunt.

  3. Someone didn't read the website information.
It is a tribunal to determine if there is cause for a trial. The tribunal is being held in the city of The Hague not a trial in the International Court.
This is also the largest crowd funding platform to date as they feel the citizens of the world should support this "tribunal".
I am opposed to Monsanto but I won't support this effort.

  5. If it is a "citizens' tribunal" then it is not in front of the International Criminal Court. So you lied in your headline. You lied in the first 11 words of the article. Why. Must. You. Lie?

  6. it's a fake trial held by a gaggle of idiots who don't represent anyone. Monsanto won't be there. Neither will the press.

  8. It's not even an official tribunal. Just some groups sponsored by the Organic Comsumers Association. Something like those Sovereign Citizen "courts" where the radicals "sue" the President and other officials. It's another March Against Monsanto publicity stunt.

  9. Luke Walker, I won't financially support the tribunal, they are asking for the funds to support it but it us being presented in such a way that is misleading. It's not a trial but a big fund raiser for the tribunal.

  10. Just like they find no problem with "wonder drugs", and then years later lawyers are soliciting clients on television commercials because the "scientists" were wrong for approving them. You can find "research" articles to support or oppose anything you wish these days on the internet.

  15. Rob Scoper I wrote because I am concerned about the long term effects. Not because I am bragging. This matter has been receintly brought to my attention, and it scared me. I work for a micro tree nursery, and I have asked my boss(the owner) if I should be concerned. He is neutral on the subject. Would he be liable if I was to get sick?

  16. Rictus Grinn I dont know your personal circumstances but surely theres enough evidence out there to support the fact that you should NOT be using these products. Fair play 12 years without evident side effects is good, but you really want to gamble with your health? How long did it take before the true dangers of agent orange become apparent. Your boss imho should not be neutral over this matter, surely anyone with any sense and access to the internet (excpecially involved in your field, like your boss) would have recearched into the dangers of these products. The fact that hes neutral tells me that he has not. If you are forced to use these products i would take every precaution and extra precautions you can to protect yourself from them. Or get your boss to put in a few hours of research until he can say with some conviction that its safe to use or not. I dont know your boss, but if hes like anything like half of my old bosses im pretty sure no one would accept responsibilty for you being sick 20 years down the line. Business is business. Sad fact but true.

  19. Something needs to be done about Monsanto! They are out of control and seems to be above the law, much like obama in the White House is! They also have ties with another massive industry that is also ethically questionable in the way of big pharma! There is unbelievably huge profits to be made in the pharmceutical companies, when it comes to cancer! Imagine this, Monsanto contaminates our food supply with carcinogens at even a higher rate than previously, more and more people develope cancer and big pharma "comes to the rescue", with more carcinogens in the forms of chemo-therapy, radiation and other terrible drugs in which all are highly profitable! Monsanto makes their big profits, because they are assured of being un-policed and have a free hand to do what they please because; and get this, big-pharma controls the FDA! This is so hard to believe, but it is definetely true! People are being used as pawns by these two corrupted industies as the means to their huge profits, which is mutually beneficial to them both with the blessings of the FDA! We were always told from childhood on, to eat healthier by eating more fruits and vegetables and they were good for us too! Unfortunately, thanks to Monsanto and others like them, that is no longer the case! You have to search much more diligently to find fruits and vegetables that are truly organic and that hasn't been contaminated by GMO crops planted nearby! So I hope that I have opened up some eyes here to the vicious, seemingly never ending circle that's going on here! Monsanto> big pharma> the FDA! Good grief! Is their any sanity or morality left anywhere in America, or are we all truly doomed to corporate and governmental despotism?

  21. This "tribunal" is essentially a conference of highly paid Big-Organic consultants that has zero..nada..ziip..nothing to do with The Hague or any real court. It is doing Big-Organic's usual work of spreading fear and misinformation to bolster their own greedy agendas. Full Disclosure – I am not now nor have I ever have been paid in any way by any bio-tech firm. I am however someone who absorbs facts and forms my own opinion unlike (sadly) many people being lied to by Big-Organic.

I respect deeply, those who have made the effort.

  23. Ryan Thomas Lenny's right. Joe, and this guy just aren't qualified to explain why animals eating GMO crops developed tumours, cancers, and died. One study feed GMO to 7 bison. All dead in 24 hours. Look up cotton GMO organism. It's a self replicating organism that invades the host. That's you, and your family. Google, Dr. Blaylock. Or other independent studies. Your forced to drink fluoride, eat GMO, breathe aluminum nano particles, and vaccinate. Everything seem ok to you?

  24. Who the fuk is " Big Organic" ? A gang of mobsters, that want us eating natural, healthy food? Those heartless bastards. LOL. You're forced to drink fluoride, eat gmo, breathe aluminium nano particles, and vaccinate if you want to keep your job. Did you know fluoride was developed from nuclear waste, by the nazis? Or that Russia used it as well? For population control. It lowers IQ, and develops a dependency on authority. These facts are not part of the university educational curriculum, so don't feel bad about not understanding this. I don't want to offend, at the same time, your like a poster child for manipulation. Study up dude. Peace out.

  25. Richard Ruscoe Big Organic is the widely accepted term for the corporations who generate collectively over $65 BILLION in annual revenue from their products; products which have been shown by thrid party independent testing to be less sustainable and less safe. Anti-GM'O "activists" like Greenpeace are preventing the introduction of Golden Rice in India for example. This rice could save tens of thousands of children from blindness due to vitamin deficiency and has been shown in years of inedendent testing to have ZERO negative biological or environmental consequences. Multiple studies have shown that a purely Organic food production system can feed a maximum of 4 billion people. Have you eaten any corn lately? Non-GMO corn is virtually non-existant. Eaten at Chipotle recently? Despite their marketing campaign their foods could not exist without GMO's as various stages of production; their "organic" fertilizer (you know, where they spread manure over the ground and the plants get coated in it for months?) might be linked to at least some of the recent publicity they didn't actually plan. By the way, since you are a Canadian I assume you know that fluoridation of the water was a wide spread practice? 😉

  26. Ron, You are sadly mistaken! "Big Organic" as you call them, are the best and healtiest thing for consumers! Uh, let's see, should I eat fruits or vegetables that have been grown as nature intended, or should I eat fruits and vegetables that has it's DNA manipulated into who knows what and infused with pesticides? Uh duh! This is a no brainer that you have obviously missed! The studies that you quote have also been manipulated by guess who? Monsanto! Monsanto along with big pharma are the two most greediest corporations on Earth and they work hand in hand to assure astronomical profits at the cost of consumers health! Monsanto are bullies too, much like the mob! They intimidate farmers into using only Monsanto seed and if they refuse, Monsanto fabricates reasons to haul them into court and bankrupt the poor farmer with expensive court costs! Our corrupted government and judicial system constantly rules in favor of the big bullies Monsanto! All that the poor farmer wants to do is make an honest living, without being dictated to about what he should and should not plant on his own land! And also, what is Monsanto trying to hide? If their products are so safe, why do they refuse to label their products as GMO? Why not give the consumer the choice of buying GMO or non-GMO foods? Why? Because Monsanto knows that if they start labeling products as GMO, that would take a substancial bite out of their profits due to more health conscious consumers refusal to buy GMOs! And why doesn't the government demand that Monsanto lable their products as GMO? Because Monsanto is in cahoots with big-pharma and guess who big-pharma controls? You've guessed it, the FDA! So these 3 are in bed with each other and the farmers and the consumers hands are tied because of it all! No Ron, The real gang of mobsters are Monsanto aided and abetted by big-pharma and the FDA! Do your research more diligently!

  28. Rictus Grinn Your boss isn't neutral on the matter. The way he conducts business is his take on the matter. He may be verbally neutral, but actions speak louder than words, as they say. The rest of this is offered as a general explanation only, no intent to offend, or upset. If there are warnings on the packaging, etc. that you have access to, and you are provided protective gear, then the company will likely have no liability associated with illness, although it would be reportable to your Worker's Comp carrier as an on the job injury. Generally, you would have to release the company and the carrier from all liability in order to receive any type of settlement, should any type of injury occur. Also, once you become aware of a risk, and continue accepting that risk (i.e. continue working in the conditions that concern you), their liability decreases further, because you are making a choice at that point. As long as an employer is doing what it is legally required to do, it is just making the business decision that works best for its needs.

  30. Lenny…. I'm sorry, that screed you wrote is just wrong. First off, your esteemed President has trimmed a trillion dollars off your national debt. Mr. Obama is far and away the very best president your country has ever had. Then there's Monanto. You haven't really read up on what they actually do compared to what you think they do via sites like infowars and Fox News…. am I right? You sir are completely wrong. You do know what the term 'organic actually means don't you? No? Well, all it means is that the food crops are fertilized with animal shit. I won't eat organic because of that. Do yourself a favor and look up what a genetically modified organism is. It's not a substance that is added to the food. You are fear mongering via willful ignorance.
