Mother Calls Police to Help Her Son Take His Medicine, Cop Shows Up and Shoots Him

(TheAntiMedia) In Gretna, Florida, Juanita Donald called the police to come assist her and get her 24 year old son to take his medication, as she had done in the past.

On Tuesday morning, around 9:30 am, she called the police to help her with her son Kaldrick Donald and one officer showed up, Sergeant Charles Brown.

Charles Brown ended up tasing Kaldrick Donald repeatedly, and then took him into the isolated bathroom in the family’s house and shot him multiple times, killing him.

Brown murdered Donald in the presence his pregnant sister and mother, and no one can even say why. He was completely unarmed, and somehow not completely sane.

His mother said “I heard my baby say, I want my mama after he shot him, and then I didn’t hear anything else.”

His mother said she was “expecting them to take him to the Apalachee Center like before”, but instead a single officer came and escalated the situation, murdering him in front of his family.

Juanita continued to say “It wasn’t but one officer. Instead of him calling for backup, he took things in his own hands and he goes in the house and he rush him and shoot him.”

She continued to say he “didn’t want to be bothered”, and that he simply walked away from the officer.

She says Sergeant Charles Brown “Just grabbed him and he tased him. Then when he grabbed him and tased him, he rushed my son off in the bathroom and I heard three shots. I was like, you shot my son and he was like, I had to. I said, no, you didn’t have to.”

Charles Brown is now on ‘administrative leave’, or paid vacation, and if this story doesn’t blow up then this officer surely will see no charges.

The Gretna Police Chief had a bland statement to give,

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Since the investigation began, we have asked the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to assist us.”

Will this officer ever be charged for murder, or anything?

This is a breaking story; only a few local news reports have been made about the incident so far and they received little attention, so this article will serve to expose this crime and be the first step in holding this person accountable.

This is so deeply immoral, a person simply cannot get away with doing this because they are authorized by the state to use deadly force. Few people know this happened yet, except for people in the city of Gretna Florida. I ask that you share this information with absolutely as many people as possible.

Only by spreading word about incidents like this can we hold these authorities accountable for the crimes they commit, and stop things like this from happening by letting these killer cops know they will face consequences.

  1. I am so disgusted by this story. That man deserves to have all his rights as an officer stripped, then he should be charged with murder. This is so unacceptable! We must make a change in how these officers run our lives. They're truly the terrorists in our country.

  6. I seriously doubt the police officer just decided to kill a person. Something had to have happened. The lady said no one saw what went on in the bathroom, yet says he was shot in front of his fMily. The two contradict themselves. What is the complete background on this. Many people are jumping to conclusions.

  7. You know what, I stop blaming the police in these cases, I'm blaming the mothers who calls the police instead of the a ambulance, I keep telling people police are no good to you unless you want to commit suicide or have someone else killed, why do people believe police can solve their problems?, THEY CAN'T, they are mostly psychopaths with guns and the authority to shoot and kill without any accountability, police weren't trained to deal with mentally challenged people, they only know how the use force, and in almost every encounter that's that's their initial option, they do not know how to think rational.

  8. I imagine people are just using the last few months worth of brutal police murders that seem to be getting more and more frequent to make up their minds, still I see you wear a uniform which suggests you are more than likely going to back up any one else that wears a uniform, as after all civilians are nothing more than collateral damage now in your lovely land of the free and home of those who murder innocent people hiding behind a badge and uniform

  9. I'd go one step further and never call them. Plenty of people who have called for criminal threats have ended up being victimized a Seco d the by the police and then again by the court system. – a very jaded former prosecutor.

  14. I feel like this story is missing significant information. Like, what were the meds for? What was the boy doing that caused the officer to taize him? Was he behaving in a way that would endanger his family (including his pregnant sister)? Without any information like this, this article sounds very biased.

  15. That could have been bad reporting, not her contradicting herself. He had no excuse Raymond. You are just showing people that people in uniform will back their own kind, no matter what. Is that the message you truely want to send people? This has been getting worse and worse and this …. was plain out murder. This cop should be punished, just like and average citizen would. The uniform mentality is… back umm up, no matter how wrong, how immoral, how callous they are. This…. is what needs to stop. Cops and military do not have carte blanche to kill whomever they feel like it just because they have been given the right to carry a gun. They are under the same laws as everyone else and should suffer the same punishment. He should have been thrown in jail that night. Citizens should not have to fear the Police. We pay their salaries!!!

  18. Being a soldier myself, I do have to agree with Raymond only on one fact. We need both sides of the story. However, gathering details from the story, the mother shouldn't have called the police in the first place. If the son wasn't taking his medication, she should have called the paramedics and have him taken to a hospital for a doctor to administer his medication. On the other hand, the officer shouldn't have taken the extreme steps he did and use his position to kill an innocent and defenseless civilian. It's absolutely wrong for someone who's in the position to defend and protect the public to do something so heinous and be on paid leave? No. He should be IMMEDIATELY stripped of his rank and all of his pay and forced to stand trial for his actions. I will back a fellow person in uniform to a certain extent, but when you start to use it to your advantage or use it for blatant power and think you can get away with anything? I don't care who you are. That won't fly.

  22. No prob Steve, and I don't defend him automatically because of uniform. The story just sounds fishy, or at least not fully reported, because no sane cop would go to a call like this and just kill to kill. I would like to know the full story. If he killed him for no reason, I would punish him worse BECAUSE of his position. He is held to a higher standard.

  24. Now here is a police killing of an unarmed man incident that should be rallied against! Police are getting more and more out of control. Their violations of people's rights and dignity are rampant, yet largely overlooked due to their checks and balance system being internal and the municipalities that employ them having a vested interest in keeping the officer "in the right" to avoid lawsuits and bankruptcy from punitive damage claims. If you defend this action, call me the next time your toddler won't eat his peas and we'll see how you feel about tasers and/or deadly force being applied. Put and end to law enforcement unionization, indemnify municipalities, use citizen "jury pools" to determine the officer's employment fate. If we, the people, can determine someone's guilt or innocence and life or death in any other trial, I think we are capable of deciding whether or not a person continues to wear a badge. And, I agree with those of you that stated, "Do not call the police for any reason". They do nothing for you that you are incapable of doing for yourself. When those entrusted to maintain order are the source of chaos it is time to get a new system. Remove guns from "beat cops" (it has worked in Britain for hundreds of years)? Term limits? Whatever. Protest, lobby, just demand/do SOMETHING.

  50. Raj, this site is all about supposed cops shooting people for no reason, so I went to the Gretna, FL newspaper and television account of it. Another source to verify this. There is MUCH more to this story than "cop shows up and blam." If you want the truth go look it up, but the man was violent with his mother and assaulted the officer. There is usually more to a story when you don't rely on one source. Go check it out, or otherwise, you are spouting about something without knowing the rest of the story. And I am not defending the cop, just presenting all the facts.

  51. Was the officer in fear for his life? Not likely. The officer was faced with an unarmed person while he himself had not only his sidearm, but a taser and either a nightstick or an asp.

If he was not in fear for his life, the use of a firearm is felonious, and he should be charged with murder.

You would be afraid of some of the crazy things that I have seen people do when they are off their medication. Paranoid schizophrenics in particular are particularly dangerous. Sadly, many of these poor folks are homeless, as they can't get any help, thanks to Dummycrat legislation that was spun to be about not "stigmatizing" the mentally ill and the general unwillingness to keep the dangerous ones in managed care facilities.

I saw a lot of them while homeless in Oregon, since the majority of the State Hospital was closed down, since they would rather spend money on entitlements.

Even if he punched a cop the cop still isn't supposed to shoot him, unless he's a little pussy who can't fight for shit. Listen no one is saying we don't need police(although a few cities in the states have shown they don't), but we need to admit when one has fucked up, just like with Doctors, just like with repairmen and mechanics, just like with Soldiers, and every other job on the planet. If a Doctor fucked up bad enough he would be fired, banned from practicing ever again, and possibly charged, it should all be relative. Also I've been tased in the back by police and it turned out they were looking for someone else and had thought it was me(they couldn't have talked to me?), they laughed about it after saying it was good they didn't shoot me! As you can imagine, I didn't find it as funny. Also I found out later they were looking for a 5'7'' skinny Asian guy with a whole head of hair, not a 230lb bald white guy, but hey simple mistake right?

These are not the brightest bulbs in the potential law enforcement gene pool. Patrol cops are NOT trained to know how to handle mentally or emotionally disturbed people without killing them. The average cop is a paranoid defensive troglodyte who thinks virtually EVERYONE is out to ambush them …. and they haven't got the sense to tell the difference between someone who is truly delusional …. and someone who is just a criminal smart – ass.

Swat team showed up and surrounded the house and wouldnt let the home owner leave, and they would only talk to him thru the 9/11 dispatcher. He kept trying to tell them that the man had ran off into the woods but they didnt go searching for him, just surrounded the home with guns drawn. Then a Negotiator came in, then they sent in a robot to verify he was the only one in the home. And then they took him to the hospital for a mental evaluation and now they are pressing charges against the homeowner.

So to recap…Called the cops after fighting off home invasion, got his home surrounded by armed cops, and now he faces criminal charges.

  86. World news stated that policemen deaths are up by 65% since 2011 and most are from ambushes. Police departments can’t really be surprised by this. As much as I hate hearing of a policeman’s death it doesn’t surprise me.
It never ceases to amaze me how police departments are always saying how they don't understand why people aren't more sympathetic when a police officer is injured or killed. Well it is their fault. Social media has exposed their brutality towards people and their pets on a daily basis and with everyone armed with a camera they will continue to be exposed. Their own actions have desensitized people to what happens to them—-and for those who aren't yet desensitized it is just a matter of time. Police openly break the law without consequences daily as evidenced by all the available video online and they wonder why they are not given any respect. You have to give it to get it.
A policeman used to be someone you could look up to and go to for help but not anymore. Now people tend to take care of themselves rather than call the police due to their lack of trust in the police. I have known some very good policemen in the past but can’t say too much about now. I keep seeing the words “Police State” used to describe people’s respective police department which doesn’t bode to well for policemen. Again you have to give respect to get it…….

  87. This has happened twice in my small town in the past year. Once the mother called 911 to ask for an ambulance for her daughter who was off meds and the police showed up and shot and killed her because she was holding a knife. Granted she had a knife, but she was also 5'2" and over 200 lbs with a leg disability. That was just a few months ago. Last year the a parents of a young man called 911 because their son, off meds, threatened to kill himself. He locked himself in the house and refused to come out. They threw flash bangs at the house repeatedly and eventually charged the home with a full SWAT team. They charged him, then shot and killed him. 2 deaths in my small town in the past year for people calling for help with their child off meds, needing MEDICAL assistance ending up with their children killed.
I do not blame the police per say, I blame the type of training they receive. They are trained in a military fashion to deal with criminal threats, not people with mental disabilities. I know of one city, San Antonio, that has started requiring mandatory training of all their officers on dealing with mentally ill people. They have seen great success AND have saved $600,000 per year in incarceration and overtime of officers. We really need to change the way officers are trained.

Even an untrained eye can see the man was dying…in the cops eyes because the dying man was unable to lift his head much less comply with their Godly demands (he wasn't cooperating). He got help about 15 minutes after he stopped breathing. How about the stroke victim arrested on the side of the road paralyzed by stroke and unable to "comply" with their demands to show his ID… was thrown in jail and left to flop on one side like a fish for 36 hours with at least 12 deputies seeing this, even my 4 year old grandson knows the symptoms of a stroke. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN CRIMINAL N MENTALLY ILL, AND PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM. Coming into the house with an inflated ego demanding a person to comply doesn't work! Treat one another with respect n know how to psychologically deal with people effectively.

I lived back then) plus Mafia did the hit on JFK, who btw is not really noticed any more by the Dems. No cop; no media guy (though I do write now retired). Long answer to I agree with you since Edward R Murrow left CBS and his team died with Cronkite after ole Walter went to VN. Cops were buds when kid; media actually asked questions not "how does that make you feel"; we knew how to read by age 4-5; school was from 8-415; we were taught to question everything and search truth for ourselves. You are most correct: I have not met a media person I can respect nor a politician nor over 50% of cops, for they, the cops, want to rule, control; and I remember studying about one man who said it over and over until his country believed him, and the world almost lost it. 195. This incident is sad. I have read the comments. This officer didnt respond to the 911 call properly. There should have been another officer and an ambulance. This is a petson with mental issues. I hope there is justice for the family. I hope the police department. The mayor . Congress gets a hold of this story there is a serious investgation witb the sergeant s background history something isnt right. There is a missing piece to this case. I have heard stories that officers like to bend the laws and they can do whatever they want becsuse that badge backs them up. I just hope the us marshal gets a hold of this story and there is a serious investgation. Prayers to the victims.

  201. The only information that matters is that he used deadly force in a situation where it was far from needed. They have to stick to protocol for these types of situations, and this is why. There is enough information provided in this article and the source that proves he wasn't following any sort of protocol, and took the life of an innocent into his own hands. I'm sure the guy was more than subdued after being tazed, but the officer didn't stop there. Welcome to America. Where state thugs kill people and the masses just nit-pick about the details.

  206. Rebekah Hodson Because he made a stupid comment blaming the parents for this. The title of this article is wrong – did you read the actual article? She called to have him transported to a mental health facility.
That's what you do in a mental health crisis. You call, usually 911 or the crisis line. They send cops. Cops sometimes transport, sometimes simply clear the area for an ambulance crew.
No, we assumed nothing. He said something ignorant that adds to the burden the families of mentally ill folks already carry. Of course that needs to spoken out against. if there's bullying, it's from people who make statements that blame the mother, because somehow she should magically have been able to fix mental illness without any help.

  216. While I agree that the story is obviously missing some key information, I get the feeling that the cop was poorly trained in dealing with people in a psychiatric crises. I'm guessing it was psych meds the guy wasn't taking. Unfortunately, cops tend to deal with things in a sort of "I am authority, bend to my commands" type of way, and if you don't they escalate it to a physical confrontation that often leads to them shooting someone. This is often the worse way to approach psych cases. Cops aren't trained to handle them properly. It's all about subduing a threat to them. So, in many ways, you should only call the cops if having the person shot is an acceptable outcome to you.

While this story is incredibly disturbing as it relates the tyrants behavior, how can anyone still believe calling the police is a good idea? How can anyone still pretend they don't know what the cops now offer? Forgive me for pointing this out, but if mom was in tune with reality as opposed to pretending reality isn't there, her son would still be alive. I am startled at the number of people still willing to pretend cops aren't murdering people in the streets daily, and that it isn't a problem

If this "son" who was a 24 year old grown man became combative and/or attempted to go for the officer's weapon, the shooting will most likely be justified. It is also irresponsible journalism for this organization to request this article be spread to many people since the most vital information is blatantly missing from the article. Sad to say but maybe her son should of been in a hospital/group home where ppl are trained to deal with situations like his. The police are not what they use to be. What meds was he refusing? Was her son dangerous at the time of this shooting? Some parents will nvr admit to not being able to take care of their child because thats what we do as parents!!! This could of been prevented if ppl would come together & make safety nets thru the hospitals/doctors for just in case this happens. Parents/family of others with mental disorders will/would be the ppl to call for help not the police

  229. I don't think it matters what he was taking meds for. If he did not have a weapon that could be used to KILL his family with then killing this man was unjust. Period!

    Post a Reply
  230. At the end of the day, assume the worst. The meds were for extreme violence and lack of self control. He swung at the officer so the officer tased him. His over reactive violence was causing endangerment to his mother and sister. End result, he should have been taken it to custody, not rushed into the bathroom and shot. Even without some "key" details, if the officer had enough strength and power over this man, that he could forcefully push him into another room of the house, he could easily have pushed him in and shut the door. In all reality, with the strength that it would take to push a man from room to room in a house, he could have just as easily restrained him. And in any call of this sort, the officer should have a partner. Until there is evidence saying that the man was either in possession of a weapon, or was significantly stronger then the officer, there are no important details missing. The cop is wrong.

Since I wasn't there I can only speculate. I agree, the story sounds a little misleading.

  240. Norma Rojas Have you ever personally had to deal with a mentally ill person who needed medication for stability? Ever tried to get a full grown adult to take medication they need but don't want? They are mentally ill, so they don't know what they need, and often resist. There are almost ZERO resources available, and the one thing you're told to do is call the crisis hotline. The crisis hotline sends the cops. Period. Many situations are no-win scenarios. There are very few resources to help people, and the cops are placed on the front line of mental illness and medical cases because that's a situation forced by the laws we have in most states. And as for whether it's an emergency or not, a 24-year old mentally ill person who could have any number of issues (think schizophrenia, bi-polar, etc.) is an emergency. Safety is a concern. But when you call for help, you expect help, not a gun shooting down another unarmed mentally ill person.

The majority of the mentally ill that police forces handle are homeless or don't have the support of family. If I had not been listening to NPR one morning I would have never had known that one police force in the country has taken the correct steps to help the mentally ill. They have saved lives and money at the same time. All police forces need to take a look at them as an example.

  290. Not "Protocol" with mental patients; always cops. Remember CDC and the Prez (when Ebola came into our land) said, the hospitals were NOT following protocol. Now remember, in Africa every country + UN for a real change look like people from space right? CDC protocol states LESS is BETTER: no head protection or tie off; face mask maybe, normal every day hospital clothes nothing else, 1 pr of gloves not 2; no wrist or ankle tie off; and no protection for feet and shoes. THAT written by CDC Gov agency and therefore PROTOCOL for Ebola. Where are 6000 of OUR troops right now? In Africa helping to contain Ebola using CDC PROTOCOL except the English, French and UN just won't come near to us. I wonder why. BTW, the reporter was in obvious shock and dismay at CDC Director. She asked if he would personally treat the Dallas patient just as he described. Yes I would without hesitation. She invited him to Dallas and treat him personally. The man died 2 days later and the CDC Director for some reason has not been on camera since. Not to Dallas for sure. And we scream why but keep voting in the same people average tenure in Congress is 27 yrs even after this election. But the real evil is the Bureaucracy who can make up to $317K, full pension, exempt from ACA medical (Obamacare where after age 75 it is the Gov NOT you NOT your MD not your hospital who decides IF you continue treatment. And Officer Brown (now claiming to be mental ill) is a fat nasty ass cop who thinks he is on a fucking swat team or something. Not saying whatever they did was right or wrong. Just questioning why they would have even been called in the first place. If this person was known to have psychiatric issues… I'm sure they have seen doctors multiple times… Not cops.

Even more combative because he doesn't know that person, I just wouldn't call a person with a gun to help calm down my mentality challenged son, who's unpredictable when he's in that mental state, it's not the cops family they don't know anything about him, all they see is a man with the potential of harming them, and they won't think twice to use lethal force, even if the guy is armed with a toothpick.

I agree Cops should be trained in mental illness, and also if he gets out of hand then the cop should call for backup…now nobody knows if they guy went for the cops gun and he had to shoot to control the issue…the guy could have taken the gun and killed everyone in the house….. so we do not KNOW why the cop shot him!! Obviously he's mental, and you shoot him anyway. I guess they still see is as 3/5 if a man. We must be when people are outraged more by a black man kicking a cat than a coo shooting a black man. If they do not know everything, they shouldn't be writing about it. Everybody goes and just blames everything on the cops because they were there. It saying I know anything about this story, because I wasn't there. Not even saying that the cop didn't shoot him, But the truth most definitely has another story that someone who was there knows, and most likely won't tell because they do not like the cops… so they are going to lie about the situation.

If you want to be "anti" media, that's fine… but make sure you're not "anti" facts also. As an ethical journalist, it is your job to report the FULL story complete with all facts available – and NOT what you deem fits within your narrative.

Yes, people must objectively determine what is fact and what is not, but I am telling you, the alternative media is the new media, we source everything so you can read the facts yourself, and mainstream media/ government websites are often NOT credible, for leaving out information and other things along those lines.

When you call 911, they ask you what the problem is, and when you tell them it's related to mental illness or a potentially suicidal person, they always send the cops first. Supposedly, police are better trained to be able to de-escalate these types of situations than paramedics are. Except that, from my experience and the experiences of others I've spoken to, most police officers' reaction is to rush up to the person and start shouting orders at them, even though you'd think it would be common sense to slowly approach a person in that state and speak to them w/ a calm tone of voice. Whatever "training" our police are getting to deal w/ these types of calls, it is clearly inadequate. All too often, they end up approaching a small, easily containable fire and dousing it with gasoline.

If the son was that bad that she had to call the cops just for him to take his meds then there's a lot more to this story sounds to me like the mother wanted a quik fix and when her son was shot she saw a news story and fast money from a lawsuit. Maybe if she dealt with her son on her own he'd still be alive. And if she couldn't deal with him he should of been in a home for his own protection and there's. The worst part is nothing is gonna bring this young man back.

Regardless, there is little to NO reason deadly force should be used on a mentally unstable individual. The use of deadly force has become all too common place, and it's sickening that individuals such as yourself have the first thought of "Well, what did/were they doing?". There was a time when those unruly and out of control were stunned, subdued, if a shot was necessary aim was taken on an extremity that stopped them in their tracks but DID NOT TAKE THEIR LIFE. Now – just shoot to kill, and no one will ask any questions. That's sad and pathetic and lazy, horrid job by those who should be helping not hurting.

Regardless of what really happened, the man had no right to shoot the woman's son (even if he was resisting a police officer). Afterall, assuming the son was really unarmed, what threat could he really have posed after the officer had tased him. In short, fuck this cop

  455. Honestly yes before getting emotionally invested in a story we should have all the details but apparently you still dont understand how police shootings work.. The people related to the victim are going to say the cop murdered their loved one for no reason. The cops are going to say they were attacked, feared for their life and had no choice but to kill. Shortly, past convictions and a drug toxicology will be released about the victim, maybe even a facebook post of him throwing gang signs, holding a pistol or choking a puppy to satisfy those too ignorant to understand past crimes and drug use does not equate a death sentence and as usual that is all thats needed for a cop to get away with murder. Here is a little bit more info gleaned from other reports. You may not notice the pattern or just flatly support police murders til it happens to someone you love.

On 29 October 2014, another local news source spoke with both Kaldrick Donald's mother Juanita and Ulysses Jenkins of Gadsden County Sheriff's Office. Donald stated that her son was first tased and then shot. Jenkins confirmed that officers were summoned to the scene over a disturbance, and indicated it is not clear why Brown shot Donald. Jenkins stated that the Sheriff's Office intended to support both parties:
The Gadsden County Sheriff's office tells us they had received a call from Donald's mother saying her son needed to be taken to a mental hospital.

Once the officer got to Donald's house, he and the officer got into a fight.

Investigator Ulysses Jenkins of Gadsden County Sheriff's Office said, "The police officer arrived, a struggle ensued and from that point during the altercation and suspect is now deceased."

"Our hearts and minds are with them during this time, it's a very troubling incident but we're doing everything we can to support the officer and the family," said Jenkins.
It is clear that Kaldrick Donald was indeed shot and killed by Sergeant Charles Brown on 28 October 2014 in Gretna, Florida. Details of the events leading up to Donald's death, including precisely why police were called and what transpired at the scene before the shooting, have not yet been confirmed; and the incident remains under investigation.

  456. Tracey Parker Galambos he just said "Hey this is contradictory" and you went on a whole thing about "Men in uniform, are gangs of very violent and irresponsible people , blah blah". He's right though, this is a contradictory statement, he is doubting that this article is not strongly skewed for pure emotional effect. I dont know what happened, nor do you, this article is painting a picture just the way it wants. I do not agree with what the officer did at all, but the way this article is written, it seems fit for a middle school debate team. Moreover, look at some of the phrases blatantly sitting there to accuse this cop of being nothing but a deranged lunatic left off the hook. When mentioning administrative leave"…or paid vacation"(line 18) the author displays this "Vacation" as something deeply wrong ,uncommon and completely cold to the incident , i can just picture the common reader's mind "oh he killed a kid and now he gets free paid vacation?!?! *grumble grumble*" IT IS standard protocol for ongoing accusations and investigations against an officer to my knowledge and always has been. and with very good reason too. Other things like "This is so deeply immoral"(line 27) and such fervorous phrases are scattered throughout this unsurprisingly short "Article" or whatever you want to call it. This man is only questioning this article and its agenda, based on a very good observation if i may add. Whether or not its correct, it has an agenda that i hope you are able to identify, but with its agenda it has failed to present and data required to make a knowledgeable conclusion on the subject, but obviously seems to include all the evidence in the world for someone eager to jump on some sort of internet riot. Looking at this article only, i fail to see what i am supposed to do, fall for the obvious overabundance of pathos?I see that outside resources are most likely out of the question for the lot of you.

  457. Sounds to me that the son suffered from mental illness. The mother should have contacted his doctor first. When she called the police she probably assumed that they would know the situation and send more than 1 officer. I am not saying that the officer is not to blame. What I am saying is that the culmination of several mistakes and assumption led to this tragedy.

  471. Police officers murder mentally unstable individuals all the time for the simple reason that they aren't adequately trained to deal with them and have no desire to. It's literally *easier* for them to just murder people because, at the end of the day, it's going to be a paid vacation for them and reinstatement with no charges after it all blows over. This happens ALL THE TIME in the United States and somehow people still think "well, there MUST HAVE been a reason", because, ya know, cops around here are so reasonable and compassionate right? I could pull up a list a mile long of police officers who have been convicted of raping people who call them, who have stolen from the people who call them, who have planted evidence, etc. There are FAR more dirty cops than people are willing to admit and the ones who aren't are still upholding the silence and the unjust system in which we're forced to live in.

The police are not out of control as you put it, PEOPLE are. Police ARE just people by the way. Because there are examples of police officers who make bad choices, make huge mistakes, or out right commit murder, it does not mean they are all out of control. Have you seen what they deal with on a daily basis?? Some don't even take that into account before dealing with them. I'm sure you know that your statement is outrageous, and irresponsible. I believe there is dishonesty, I'd be a fool not to, but I also believe there are good upstanding officers in our country who put their lives on the line everyday to serve others. Not to mention the many who have fallen in the line of duty. Saying they are all corrupt is an insult to those who are upstanding and honest, and have given their time and lives to serve. Believe me, I know there is evil in the world and some of it wears a uniform, just as some of it may come in the form of a prosecutor or even a judge, who knows? But good can also wear that uniform and it depends on the individual.

Details of the events leading up to Donald's death, including precisely why police were called and what transpired at the scene before the shooting, have not yet been confirmed; and the incident remains under investigation.

  499. There are bad cops and good cops; blaming them all for the actions of a few is ludicrous. Our country is ridiculous in the fact that we separate everyone by a category or a group. Sexuality, gender, ethnicity, religion and even age, all placed into groups. WHY? Look at our government, Dems hate Reps, when in reality there is no possible way that many different people can all think the exact same way on every single issue there is in the world. But yet, they have the country divided worse than ever! Declaring they all think the same is an impossibility. Declaring that all cops are dishonest and killing innocent people all over the country is also impossible. Until we start to understand the fact that every single person is an unique individual who thinks for themselves and should be judged by what they do and not who they are, or what they believe, things will never change.

  503. I'd like to hear the real story. Wouldn't everyone feel differently if it comes out the son had a gun and was going to kill the family and the cop was almost his first victim? Not saying that happened at all, but let's wait until the facts come out so we know what happened. Innocent until proven guilty…

  504. There are too many police officers getting away with alot of stuff because people either can't afford to do anything about it or it just gets swept under the rug like most things that involves or has anything to do with the law or police officers, this is crazy and is happening not only in Florida but in other states as well.

  505. Deb Nickelsen Aldrich WRONG. If there were good cops why are they not arresting the bad one's? Your argument is flawed. Sorry. The thin blue line is there and you are on one side of it and they are on the other. And never the two shall meet. IF you want to fool yourself into thinking there are good cops go ahead. But, don't say you were not warned. Do some research. Try Tribute to survivors of child sexual assault by law enforcement officers. on fb for starters and go from there. Not good reading. :(

  506. There would have been nothing immoral in the mother in turn shooting the cop.

When the law no longer protects you, indeed it is an instrument of your oppression, and in this case your murder, then the agents of the state have ceased to be deserving of any benefit of the doubt.

The odds of this cop facing murder charges are about 1 in 1000 based upon my reading stories like this (abuse by cop up to an including murder – outright murder which happens at least once a month).

So, the mother here will not get "justice" from the state because the state will protect its agent.

We live in a police state now. EVERY state. Because the police can kill you with (near) impunity.

I filed a complaint and got a decision that it didn't happen. My sister disowned me for calling her and telling her about it, and the truth is, nobody gives a Damn.

You wanna kill someone, do like we did and join the army, and if you make it through training, which I highly doubt you will, then you can kill the enemy. Don't make American Citizens the enemy.

I too have serious doubts we are hearing the whole story. BUT BOTTOM LINE, they called and asked for help and the young man is dead… why would they only send one officer out?

Like 4 or 5 officers showed up and when the young man became agitated and stood up in the bathtub, they shot him like a zillion times, even after he fell they kept shooting…emptied the clip. no tazors there. The video is on the net if you look for it. (p.s. don't forget to shoot the dog on your way out, thanks)

  524. Whether or not there is any truth to this article, first know that your comments piss me off. A mental illness is an illness just the same as a physical illness. Before you go running off at the mouth that this mother isn't doing her job or that there is help for mentally ill you need to know that there isn't a lot of help for these people. Any parent taking care of a mentally ill adult has made the selfless decision to put their own life on hold to care for their child. It's life long. There's no cure, magic pill or a specific type of parenting skill to remedy a mental illness. Cops are called usually it's part of the protocol when responding to a crisis, so HOW DARE YOU call it abuse of the system. People that aren't experienced in this first hand should really keep their ignorant comments to themselves!

  528. Deb Aldrich it is not just my experience I watched the police mess over other people repeatedly. Some of them I have represented against the police. Police departments are run by human beings that and throughout the history of man we have seen the atrocities wrought by those with that same police power. To think that an organization focused on power which is run by humans would not be mainly prone toward evil is incredibly naive. Our forefathers recognized that and attempted to put some protections in place for us. On the other hand I'm sure there were many people who believed like you do about the police power in pre WWII Germany

  532. This story is missing so much j formation it is unbelievable the officer wouldn't just shoot and murder someone if he was not threatened mentally ill or not plenty of people who commit crimes get away with the mentally ill plead all the damn time you know how many cop hunters there are in this world that talk crack on cops and also talk about how they hate them and want to kill them and many do kill them and take a husband wife daughter or son from their family and do not give one once if crap. This story is a bunch of bull and there is so much missing from this story like what did the kid do to the officer to make him shoot and also he had to be tased so he wouldn't harm anyone else cause if he harmed anyone else yall would be complaining about how the officer didn't do his job so don't complain and be a bandwagon about this just because it made some little article that clearly is missing a bunch of details that are very important. So do not bash on the cop or how he should stripped of his rights because if he solidly shoot he'd probably be dead and none of you would care or you'd be complaining about mentally ill people killing and how we need to take better care of them and lock ten up. Also the lady shouldn't have called the cops she should've asked for the emts first they're specialized in this. So if you do. It know full details do not talk about the situation.

  540. You say yourself, "MAINLY prone to evil" relaying the fact that you know it is not ALL, even a majority is not ALL. You have made my point for me. Bringing up Germany is really reaching, especially when it's obvious the media is going for sensationalism as always. Oh, the example you gave is once again, just your point of view and even if you've been all over the world, it is still just ONE viewpoint. I have had my own experiences with the police and it's a completely different experience than yours. As well as millions of others who have had their own experiences, which also may be nothing like what you've experienced. This is why I am saying that this can't be based on one person's experience, unless you have dealt with every single police officer on the force, in every city and every state, in every rank and title at every moment of their service, than you REALLY can't say honestly, that they are all corrupt. I do not believe you will understand what I'm trying to say though, because you already have your mind made up and may be a bit jaded. You are definitely blind to the fact that people are individuals with individual lives making individual choices.

  541. Yes, I understand this is a heartbreaking situation and I hope the family will recover, but there's just so much missing from this story that I'm not really sure what to think. It gives no information on the people involved other than their names, gives no motive, no word from the officer in question, no reason as to why this mother needed help to get her son to take his pills, nothing. What were the pills even for? Did the son provoke the officer in any way to receive the tazing, and eventually the gun shots? We don't know anything. This really just sounds like a sensationalist story that someone made/found to get people all rallied up against police officers.

  542. While your comment makes sense, understand that there is not enough adequate help for the mentally ill. This has NOTHING to do with inability to care for their child. Even the 'help' that is available is not enough when you are dealing with a serious mental illness. Unfortunately, even counseling and outpatient psychiatry has LONG waiting lists. As for hospitals, regardless of what type of insurance you have the mentally ill person actually has to have had several incidents of dangerous before they will even consider inpatient programs, which means that in the meantime, crisis centers themselves will even ask for police assistance when responding to these calls. While your suggestion would work in a perfect world, unfortunately for the mentally ill and those caring for them we are up against a very flawed 'system'

  543. My comment is aimed towards those of you criticizing the parents of mentally ill people. I will not get into a debate as to the validity of this article but there are comments here that are uncalled for. First off, stop calling them crazy people. A mental illness is just as much an illness as a physical ailment. Second, any parent caring for a mentally ill person adult or child know that we're in it for life. It's a lifelong battle; there's no cure, magic pill or specific type of parenting technique to remedy the person. Lastly, know that there are limited resources available to 'help' There are LONG waiting lists for outpatient treatment. When you call a crisis center it's often their protocol to call police because they need to make sure the environment is safe prior to responding. Trying to get inpatient treatment is a joke. Doesn't matter what insurance you have, often the afflicted have to have several incidents of hurting themselves and/or others before being CONSIDERED to be taken in as inpatient. Stop bashing the parents. Life with mentally ill children is difficult enough and it's LIFELONG. It's us against a very flawed mental health system and unless you deal with it personally PLEASE keep the ignorant comments to yourself!

When the whole story came out the man was mentally disturbed, very violent and had a weapon that his family hid before the rest of the police showed up. Naturally you are only going to hear how innocent he was from his family but if this women had to call the police don't you think it was over more than him just not taking his medicine, let's be for real about this and read between the lines.

I think it is real crazy for the cop to have killed a mentally ill person he was trying to hide something why dragging him in a bathroom which means he wasn't resisting or fighting back if he dragged him then another thing is that the cops been called before to help him take his mess before so that should have been on record for the cop to know the cops are post to protect and severe not to be brutal and murder all yu people that's justify ING what the cop did have wool pull over your eyes what if it was your family member would you want him to be killed all because he or she has a mental illness which should have be the cops first knowledge which I'm sure he knew if he was trying to harm anyone that's when yu call the proper authorities or ever deals with things like that not to take matters into your own hands the taxes was enough it self also with mental illness the taper could have put him into a seizure when it's a disorder involve your post to be trained on different tactic s what if it was one you guys family members I'm from Delaware and police corruption is everywhere and brutality is happen and spreading rapidly I done seen innocent ppl harassed beat up set up and go to jail for things they didn't do and Lord knows when yu do know your rights that pisses them off even more yu file complaints they fuck with yu even more sometimes it's about race and sometimes it's not I done seen it with my own eyes so I could only imagine what's happening in Florida and more cops is starting to kill people once they see that others are getting away with it and you ignorant people upholding them just makes them even more violent
