Obama Appoints Notoriously Corrupt Police Commissioner to Improve Cops’ Credibility

(TheAntiMedia) When a politician claims to improve an oppressive condition, there is usually an unspoken catch.

This week, President Barack Obama unveiled his plan to deal with police brutality and militarization (which he helped to enable over the course of his presidency). He has ordered $263 million for 50,000 body cameras and called for restrictions and oversight on military equipment.

Though on its face the plan has good intentions, it has already been criticized by activists and the media.

One of the most disingenuous elements of Obama’s master plan is his appointment of Philadelphia Police Commissioner, Charles Ramsey, to chair the “Task Force on 21st Cenutry Policing.” Ramsey is co-chairing the task force with Laurie Robinson, a former assistant attorney general and professor at George Mason University. The force is allegedly responsible for restoring trust and good relations between police officers and communities. A White House press release claimed that,

“Recent events in Ferguson, Missouri and around the country have highlighted the importance of strong, collaborative relationships between local police and the communities they protect.  As the nation has observed, trust between law enforcement agencies and the people they protect and serve is essential to the stability of our communities, the integrity of our criminal justice system, and the safe and effective delivery of policing services.”

While body cameras and restrictions on military equipment are easy to spin as positive (though the practice of militarization will not be stopped, only “curbed”), it is not as easy to fake credibility for Ramsey. The officer, who is also the president of the Major Cities Chiefs Police Association, runs one of the most corrupt police departments in the nation.

He was once the police chief of Washington, D.C. and has presided over Philadelphia’s department since 2008. Ramsey worked for the Chicago police department for thirty years and is currently a member of the “United States Homeland Security Advisory Council.”

On his watch, a federal investigation into corruption was launched over conspiracy, robbery, extortion, kidnapping and drug dealing. The Philadelphia police were caught ignoring thousands of rape cases to keep their crime numbers low. Before marijuana was decriminalized, Philly police arrested African-Americans for marijuana at an even higher rate than the rest of the country (which is already grossly high). Even after a decriminalization bill was passed this June, Ramsey vowed to continue arrests pursuant to Pennsylvania law. Other cops stole half a million dollars of drug money from suspects.

Philadelphia police are also no strangers to harassment and murder on the job, which is what Obama allegedly seeks to diminish in appointing Ramsey. Ramsey’s cops threaten to beat teenagers. They actually beat all kinds of people– over and over  and over. They also indulge in shootings, which occur all too often and shirk accountability.

Most telling, during the initial waves of protest in Ferguson this summer, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar sought frequent advice from Ramsey on how to handle the situation.

Belmar refused to apologize for the way police treated protesters (even as Ferguson chief Thomas Jackson did), which included the harassment of journalists and those dissenting peacefully.

Wilson’s murder of unarmed Michael Brownand police reactions to protests and the lack of grand jury indictmentare what sparked the president’s “task force” to begin with. Somehow, however, it is lost on Obama that restoring faith in cops cannot come from putting a corrupt cop in chargelet alone a corrupt cop who advised St. Louis County police on their cruel, aggressive tactics.

Obama’s appointment demonstrates that his plan is nothing more than a sham to appease an increasingly discontent and angry populace without effecting actual change.

The task force has 90 days to prepare a report and recommendations for the “21st century” problems of policing. But if Charles H. Ramsey cannot curb corruption and excessive violence within his own department, it is unlikely he will inspire change at the national level.

  4. We must host voter registration parties, and organize voting parties and motor pools on election day. We must make our requirements known to our elected officials.
If they do not meet our requirements, we must field and support candidates from within our own ranks to replace them. Take action now. There are efforts underway to curb the current level of freedom enjoyed by the internet. We must use the internet, while we can, to organize as stated above.

More people need to open their eyes and realize that the people who truly hold power in the global economic system use the media and the Democratic-Republican party to keep us focused on issues of division. This allows each wing of the Dem-Rub party to claim to be the voice of opposing sides, while they really focus on the interests of their primary funders, to who's think tanks/universities/lobbying firms/law firms etc. they accept well paid positions in after their terms in office are complete.

Right now, there is a completely decentralized effort of people unknowingly working together toward educating the public about this problem, and the fact that it cannot be solved by voting for people who speak with silver tongues but don't really represent the interests of anyone or anything but personal gain. We must use the internet, while we still can, to educate ourselves, as well as to field and support candidates from within our own ranks.

You can fully join this effort simply by using the internet, while you still can, to research everything you can about the current global economic structure, its history, the people involved in its evolution and maintenance, and particularly, where the money goes. Follow money trails. They are informative, not only about what monetary interests a candidate may have, but also about who benefits in the end from everything in the global economic system, who loses, and why.

Try to find sources that most people will look upon as reputable. There is still, for example, a vast treasure of declassified government documents, as well as those never classified to begin with, available freely on government web sites, or with a Freedom Of Information Act Request.

Most importantly, and I can't stress this enough, SHARE WHAT YOU LEARN and ENCOURAGE others to investigate on their own and draw their own conclusions.

  7. We send military members to at least a year of training to drop them off in a war zone and tell them they can't shoot unless their. Wing shot at but our cops get a badge and gun with no training and get to use their gun whenever they feel the need. Shouldn't it be the other way around. Cops should only be able to use their gun when one is being used aginst them. And let our soldiers have the greenlight to shoot when they feel threatened. They are the real people that serve and protect us. NOT the police.

  8. According to several newspaper exposes, including a very detailed report within the last two months in the Washington Post which someone in the White House must have read, under Ramsey's leadership the Philadelphia Police Department has been one of the cities leading the pack in stealing its residents' property through exaggerated or manufactured excuses to apply civil forfeiture, even taking the houses of several property owners whose only crime was to be related to a person accused of minor drug offenses. Exactly the kind of person not to have leading an anti-corruption group unless the reason for Ramsey's appointment is that "it takes one to know one".

  12. Robyn Su Miller. I can see that you're one the people that actually refuse to accept the facts in this case. That doesn't make the fact that YOU'RE AN IDIOT any easier to accept either. I feel sorry for you. Being led around like a fool such as you are. My pity to your ignorance in youth. There are so many more worthy causes you could stand for other then trying to martyr a thug piece of crap like Mike Brown.

  15. Robyn Su Miller Well, Mike Brown is reported as being 6'4" to 6'5" (I've seen both posted in news stories) And he was clearly at least 300 pounds. And last I knew, 18 was considered the standard age of adulthood in America, it's the age at which you can vote and join the military, so he wasn't protecting himself from an unarmed teen, he was protecting himself from an enormous violent adult. If someone who has at least 1-2 inches in height and near a 100 pound weight advantage attacks you, you're only real defense would be a firearm, even for a cop. Last I knew, the police weren't generally highly trained mixed martial artists able to stop an attacker with a huge size and possibly strength advantage. Put a badge and gun on you, and without shooting me, I doubt you could stop me if I blasted you in the face with my fist, and I'm nowhere near as big as Mike Brown. And if I had the chance to attack you first, the only weapon I'd be worried about is your gun, it's hard to mace or tazer someone effectively when you're being attacked, but start popping off rounds while I'm doing it and I'd stop attacking you.

  17. Troy man sounds like you dont know all the facts. The time he was attacked he was in his cruiser. At the time Brown was shot Wilson had time to get anything to control the situation. You seriously believe that while chasing Brown he couldn't grab anything other than his gun, sounds to me like youre simply one sided. Also if a police man is terrified by someone running at him to the point he has to pump six rounds into someone he shouldnt be a cop. And as for the martial arts comment, wow thats just ignorant beyond belief. You say they aren't trained well or they dont use their training while on duty then I'd agree.

If a huge man with a gun and a police car is scared of a large teen with no gun that man should not be a policeman. Or at least wear Depends. You need to lay off the Purple Nurple! Or not, because it tickles me you think I'm young. I'm a crone. And I know exactly what you are….you are a person who takes the word of a killer when he says the kid was charging him. You are unAmerican because you don't believe in innocent until proven guilty, or in trials, and you are OK with cops being judge, jury and executioners.

HOWEVER, your blatant disrespect towards Robyn is really inappropriate, and considering that what she said is some pretty reasonable stuff. She didn't deny the facts of the case. She didn't talk about the evidence. She only vocalized that an ARMED COP who is 6'4" and 210 pounds should not have to, in any situation, take down a 6'4" 200-some-pound unarmed teenager. If you disagree, my friend, then I'm not sure why you feel human life is worthless.

Even the Coroner ruled the death a Homicide due to compression of the esophagus!! This is the case that should promote National outrage!! NO CHARGES AT ALL FILED? Not even involuntary man slaughter? That just makes me phucking sick!! Then this guy is chosen to "Clean up the Cops" across the Nation? To restore National faith in local law enforcement? Of all the super qualified and ideal people, THIS is the guy he chose? I feel like this administration is now just phucking with us like a sadistic bully standing by, pointing and laughing while he comes up with new ways to torment us at every opportunity. They testified that it happened pretty much the way Wilson said it did. Oh yes.. I know that Browns partner in crime testified too. The grand jury simply stated the facts as they saw them. As far as I'm concerned that cop saved Missouri all kids of money from future incarnation. 30. Tim Palmer Everyone knows police are armed, yes? So if you're an armed uniformed cop in your police cruiser and someone reaches through the window and punches you, do you suspect anything but that man to be armed as well? Who attacks an armed cop unless they themselves are armed? And what cop, knowing that everyone knows he is armed, would suspect an unarmed man would attack him? And Natalie, yes, they are useless, get a woman that's 2 inches shorter than me and 100 pounds lighter than me and give her whatever classes you want, and let me punch her in the face when she doesn't expect it, and she's going out. And I never said that 100 pounds would be too much for an mma fighter, I said that kind of size advantage can generally only be overcome by someone with that level of training. And it may be spelled eightTEEN, but guess how he would have been charged if he wasn't dead for assaulting an officer? As an ADULT, because at 18 you're an ADULT, you can fight in wars and die for your country and elect your countries leaders, and that makes you an ADULT.

  36. Nathan Chambers : The word "facts" and Fox news (or any other main stream propaganda outlet for that matter) go together? Sorry. Their job is to divide, confuse, and to control. Did you miss that somehow? They want to divide you from your neighbors friend, and it looks like they have succeeded in your case. just how did your neighbors who ask questions of authority get to be the problem in a nation of the people and by the people and for the people which happens to look more and more like a Police State? We should all be asking hard questions. Of course we don't have all the facts. But how can we in a security state that has replaced the natural functioning of a true republic? They want to divide us. Don't you get that? Or is it more important that you keep on being convinced that you are right and not to be asked questions or challenged about our political situation? JWC

I feel like the New York choking death was a much more credible instance of police brutality, and while I wish Mike Brown was still alive, as far as I can see, he brought it on himself. I would expect nothing less than to get shot if I walked up to a police officer and started punching him through his window, and I'm very lilly white.

They come here to stir up strife because they suffer from an extreme form of guilt. When one just simply can no longer deny the problem they will place blame on anyone who addresses the problem, if its possible. Its like when men blame women for getting raped and say things like “Well did you see the way she was dressed, she was asking for it.” it’s a form of Cognitive Dissonance. They will simply not take any responsibility for their own actions. Thank God for the young protesters from every ethnic group, there is hope for America after all. Our young people are the future leaders of tomorrow. Unlike some older heads full of hate, they know that a divided Nation will not stand, just like A house divided against itself cannot stand.

The thug that he was trying to subdue was much taller and weighed over 300 pounds and do you know that more people are killed by being beat to death than are killed with guns? Dumb ass I would like to see you live one day in the shoes of a policeman and see what your smart assed chats would be like then! Maybe then you would thank police men and women for protecting your sorry ass which in all likely hood is being supported by police people who pay taxes that fund your food stamps, medical care and whatever!

  76. Look what this cat brought in in a Fox to guard the hen house. Exactly what this country needs at this vulnerable time a corrupt Police Chief to bring order to race the race baiting media and of course the politicos. We need a CIVILIAN not a former cop, former chief but a sharp individual with a keen eye for details and will not cower to the politics. Matters not whether Black or White but an American with pride and a sense of justice. The black man is being racially profiled..Have you heard of DWB it is a fact. Not all cops are corrupt, not all blacks are thugs and not all whites are Racists. The police have a serious issue with abuse that is over use of their authority and power, Blacks just do not trust the police and I can not blame them and white people are ignoring the issue. I am fed up with all of it. It is 2014 and I thought the racial divide was getting close to being color blind. I was hoping we look at the character of the man and not the color of their skin. I am not wrong but our Tyrant for a President is leading us this way and appointing someone with the reputation of this guy goes to show it. Maybe there should be a commission to bring the issues to the forefront and develop straight forward solutions to the problems. Al no so sharp Sharpie and the Rev. of what I do not know Jackson are not the answers here. Straight talk, honesty, no race baiting, to start with.

  77. Don McCoy Still seeing that big old mean, crazed Black man, that wants to ravish all White women, huh, Don? On day real soon, some Jack-ass young, rookie, Whiteboy cop will encounter you and split your head open with his nightstick because you answered him wrong. Only then will you scream bloody murder and point out how you've been wrong. However no one will hear you Don. Just look at Bill Cosby's dumb, Black ass now! Ha, a White wino won't even wave hello to his ass. Next, Barley will go down and he will scream loud and clear for the world to hear. Screw him!

  78. We The People of other state do not recognize that person as an office of the law for our states. We The People have the sole power over our state and local law enforcement. Any one appoint by the federal government has no say in state matters. The Department Of Home Land Security has over step its authority and federalize state and local police known that is unconstitutional. We The People demand all state and local police be released for the Department Of Home Land Security and full back under the control of the state and local authority, End police unions and give back control to We The People with civilian oversight and review broads.
