(ANTIMEDIA) — Al Gore, John Muir, Leonardo DiCaprio… Osama Bin Laden?
Reuters reports that newly released documents suggest Osama Bin Laden was an ardent climate change advocate and cared deeply about the environment and global ecosystems.
Letters seized during a raid in Pakistan in 2011 reveal a surprisingly passionate belief held by the alleged mastermind of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States.
The letter, which, according to intelligence officials was written in 2009, is addressed “to the American people.” It implores them to assist President Barack Obama in tackling climate change.
A second letter purportedly written by bin Laden called for a 10th anniversary 9/11 media campaign to reduce greenhouse gases. “[T]he world should put its efforts into attempting to reduce the release of gases,” bin Laden wrote to an individual named Shaykh Mahmud.
Though the letters are undated and unsigned, intelligence officials have compared the writings to other documents produced by bin Laden and come to the conclusion that the former leader of Al Qaeda wrote them.
“This is a struggle between two of the largest cultures on Earth, and it is in the shadow of catastrophic climate conditions,” bin Laden said.
In addition to climate change, bin Laden wrote that the 2007-2008 economic recession in America was caused by rampant corporatism and special interest lobbyists. The corporate control of capital also precipitated the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to infamous figure. Presumably, he was referring to private defense contractors and the corrupt disbursement of military funds to war profiteers like Halliburton.
The letters do not refer to Osama bin Laden’s specific involvement in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, which are generally believed to have been major catalysts for the war on terror in the Middle East.
The recently discovered letters aren’t the only evidence of bin Laden’s views regarding climate change. Previously, in a video released to al-Jazeera, the radical jihadist proclaimed:
“Speaking about climate change is not a matter of intellectual luxury — the phenomenon is an actual fact. All of the industrialized countries, especially the big ones, bear responsibility for the global warming crisis.”
