The Dalai Lama Just Told the World to Stop Praying for Paris

(ANTIMEDIA) In the Western world, the Dalai Lama is best known for promoting consciousness, self-evolution, and inner peace. Though he is an outspoken activist for freedom in his native country, Tibet, he rarely speaks on global political affairs. In the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks, however, the Buddhist leader shared an astute and vital perspective on the state of the world—one reached through spiritual beliefs rooted in peace and humanity.

Asked about Friday’s terrorist attacks during an interview with German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, the Dalai Lama downplayed the power of pleading with deities. “We cannot solve this problem only through prayers,” he said, possibly referencing worldwide calls to #PrayForParis. “I am a Buddhist and I believe in praying. But humans have created this problem, and now we are asking God to solve it. It is illogical. God would say, solve it yourself because you created it in the first place.”

Noting that people want to live peaceful lives, he dismissed Friday’s terrorist attacks as “short-sighted,” suggesting this mentality contributes to many suicide bombings. Though the Dalai Lama did not further analyze the causes of last week’s attacks, he acknowledged the problem of chronic aggression around the world.

The twentieth century was a violent one, and more than 200 million people died due to wars and other conflicts. We now see a spillover of the previous century’s bloodshed in this century,” he said. One estimate suggests his figures are low and that governments killed over 250 million of their own people alone last century.

When the interviewer suggested his sentiments of peace, love, and compassion have fallen on deaf ears around the world, the Dalai Lama declined to entertain a pessimistic view. “I disagree. I think that only a small percentage of people subscribe to the violent discourse,” he said. “We are human beings and there is no basis or justification for killing others. If you consider others as brothers and sisters and respect their rights, then there is no room for violence.”

Rather than dwell on the small minority of violent instigators, the Dalai Lama focused on solutions. “If we emphasize more on nonviolence and harmony, we can herald a new beginning,” he said. He also cautioned against failing to work toward this ideal: “Unless we make serious attempts to achieve peace, we will continue to see a replay of the mayhem humanity experienced in the 20th century.”

The Tibetan native was forced to flee his homeland amid a 1959 uprising against the Chinese government, which invaded the region in 1950. He still lives in exile in India but has long been an advocate for peaceful resolution of the conflict—even as Chinese authorities have attempted to replace him with a “communist-approved alternative.” Discussing the Tibet-China conflict, he maintained his view that “we are living in the 21st century and all conflicts must be resolved through dialogue, not by force.”

Living by his own words, he expressed that if Tibetans decide they no longer want his leadership, he will step aside. “In 2011, I officially announced that it was up to the Tibetans if they wanted to keep the institution of the Dalai Lama,” he said. “If the people think that this institution is no longer relevant, it should be abolished. I am no more involved in political matters. I am only concerned about Tibet’s well-being.”

In spite of his distance from politics, he continued to emphasize the importance of peace to the survival of humanity:

We need a systematic approach to foster humanistic values, of oneness and harmony. If we start doing it now, there is hope that this century will be different from the previous one. It is in everybody’s interest. So let us work for peace within our families and society, and not expect help from God, Buddha or the governments.

He also echoed an inclusive sentiment the world undoubtedly needs to hear, saying “the problems that we are facing today are the result of superficial differences over religious faiths and nationalities. We are one people.”

  2. If we followed this logic we shouldn't pray about anything, all problems in existence are here only because of humans. The world is broken because of sin which came into the world because of humans. We don't pray for some kind of easy fix, God is not duct tape or a band-aid he is God. Savior. Father. Provider and Protector.

  6. I'm sorry Alex but if you have ever experienced Deep meditation you will realise this man has been closer to god than you will ever reach in any church. If every 8 year old in the world was taught to meditate there would be no violence in the world. I wish the same could be said about any other religon or faith in the world 🙁

  7. He may not speak for God but do you think that if you go out and intentionally murder people you should be forgiven and God should fix a problem you intentionally made with no regard, knowing it is wrong. Knowing the only reason you did it was for money. You cannot intentionally commit sin and think you can pray your way out of it, you reap what you sow!!!!

  8. The Dalai Lama says some of the most profound statements. "Man creates a problem & than ask God to fix it" Only one who is in tune with the universe could see the inherent non-logic in praying for a solution to a man made situation. I've been in the presence of the Dalai Lama several times and he radiates love, compassion & a feeling of being close to the higher power a.k.a God. If we all stopped each day to quiet our minds so we could absorb the purity of the universe. The deafening loudness of negative thought would disapate into the quiet positive nature of law, compassion & concern for our fellow humans as well as all creatures dwelling on this planet.

  10. Mitchell LaGrange sure there were other words in there. love your fellow man we are all one blah blah nothing profound. just the same nonsense everyone has already said time and time again. this mess will not be fixxed. we did make it, but we made god as well. if fools want to pray to him for a solution, let them. people need to understand one thing. you cant make everyone think the same. you never will. the only useful thing he hinted at was that we need to focus on our own lives and our own happiness and the people we know. I can get behind that. but still, all of this has been said by multiple other people, why is it special cause he said it?

  12. God is a figment of your imagination only meant to give you a reason to cling onto this meaningless existence which you endure. God is only meant to help you keep sanity. You are god. It's that simple. You protect yourself. That is life. We should take action and stop praying. Maybe more will get done.

  17. Why do you attempt to speak for god by saying someone does not speak for god? If you are Christian you believe others have spoken for god throughout time (Moses, Noah, Peter, Paul, Abraham ECT) why not the Dali lama? Because he is not Christian? Neither where any of those people.

  19. So basically he's saying "Don't make God into our scape goat". We humans made the problems (with every action there is a equal and opposit reaction) and need to take responsibility for them and fix them. How can we consider our life a gift from God if we don't value others lives too.

  20. Seungli Robaatoson, I would beg to differ. I find it much harder to go about life believing in God. I'd rather not think there is one, that way I can do things the way I'd like to and then when it comes down to it just take a nice dirt nap. It’s much more intimidating to have to answer to someone once my time is up. And no one is saying that we should just pray, a lot of people don't understand the concept of prayer. It's a way to communicate with God, not simply ask for things. He isn't a genie. But then again there are so many misconceptions about God, especially amongst Christians. I would go as far as to suggest that we've embraced your idea of being our own god, by placing the responsibility on our own concept of God. I digress. Action is key, like you say, but what's the point if it’s misguided?

  21. What an incredibly misleading title that is terribly disrespectful. At no point does the Dalai Lama tell the world to "stop praying for Paris", only that we need more than prayer, which is very true.

  24. To understand all of this, we need to first look at why we have so many religions. Simple reason is, to improve humanity. Christianity was born out of paganism and Buddhism was born out of Hinduism, because both Hinduism and paganism had their drawbacks which were tormenting the society. But because each one of us has our own unique opinions and reasons, we made our choices about the religions we wanted to be part of. About what is happening now, we need to ask who benefits by dividing society in the name of religion and spreading hatred. Politicians, religious leaders, business corporate and most importantly, weapons manufacturers. It is simple logic that they are the ones who are supplying weapons to both governments and terrorists. They are the ones who are fomenting the divide and driving dissidence into terrorism. This is all about money and nothing else. They are simply using religion as one of the tools to accumulate wealth at the cost of people's lives. All political parties have to toe the line of the powerful business lobby irrespective of their ideological differences. There is no God out there who is going to come down and solve humanity's problems. The Universe needs both positive and negative energy in equal measures to maintain it's balance. So there is nothing to be surprised about what is happening on our planet. The Universe is evolving along with everything in it and whatever we are seeing and experiencing is all part of this process of evolution. The onus is upon us to improve ourselves and eliminate what is dividing and ailing us. We as a species has been left to our fate and we have to decide whether we want to perish or pull ourselves out of the rut we are in and ultimately become enlightened beings.

  26. "Don't pray for Paris, work for peace." Does make sense, because unfortunately, I will say it, the majority are misguided and misunderstand prayer. If we all work towards peace, because our intentions are pure, god will help us to achieve the goals that we wish to attain. As goes in any aspect of life.

  27. Joseph Caleb Simon Too many people live in a selfish fantasy, as products of the environment, and it is contributing to core reason of humanity's toil. It coincides with ignorance. Born pure but quickly chained to the evil within others. You are misguided and I hope you find your way out man.

  28. First off carol, yes we do have the privilege of knowing God firsthand, that's the beauty in all of this, we have a God that cares enough to desire, not need, but desire a relationship with creation. That's how all of this was supposed to work: Creator and creation coexisting in perfect relationship.
But seungli I'm not sure what "god" you think that I serve, but God desires for us all to be whole creatures, half of which is holiness, in other words living a life characterized by love, if that's selfish than I'd love to be selfish. And this toil and evil you talk about is sin, which God desires to free us from through his own sacrifice in Christ and a holiness that flows from his love into our hearts and out into the world around us

  32. THE LOGOS are the KEYS in manifestation,we call them letters, put together they make words; whether the words in the prayer are spoken or said mentally, nevertheless, they have power..We are praying to an unknown God using a language that we are borrowing from descendants who have taught us what they think is right, the sacred primal languages have been lost in translation…unless you have a thorough understanding in Gematria, the numerolgy of letters, you have such a minimal idea to what you trully are asking for. The Dalai Lama simply believes, as i do, cease in praying for those who are into the stage of death. Cease in giving this specific place your divine attention. i suggest focusing intention and attention upon those who are living…to believe is to understand, to not believe is to not understand…

  38. I am surprised someone of his theological stature would get a basic concept so wrong. Actually several, but I will stick to the main premise of prayer. He thinks people are praying to solve the problem, but they are not. They are praying that God would comfort them and possibly intervene to save lives of anyone critically injured. Too bad he uses this opportunity to show his week concept of prayer and the nature of man as totally depraved. But that is where Christians and Buddhists defer.

  56. There is no God to pray to – no Savior – as you are it! When you ask for sometinhg or pray to some supposed someone you are placing yourself lower than some other – which is not a possibility unless you make it appear as reality and potential and possibility. Putting someone above self is like saying all conscious beings were not created equally – and they were (are) in fact. Stop handing your power and abilities over to osmeone other than the true creator of your reality – which is you.

  57. We live in a new age – and that is the Age of Enlightenment. For those who admit to this enlightment and awakening of human kind they should also be aware that there is no God – never was a God – and never will be a God – as Gods are manifested in one's mind so as to provide ones hope in the fact that someone other than self is responsible for everything that has happened on our world from the beginning of the beginning of time. If you still believe there is a God however then pray to this supposed God and see how often your prayers appear to be answered – in perfect detail or even in the smallest detail for that matter – without you having to shift the details to your prayers around to fit with your beleif that there actually is a God. If you truly want your world to change for the better and if you seek a world of peace and abundance for all of human kind then the journey begins with you and no one else. You cannot change others either as they too are their own Creator – their own manifestor of intended realities. We are the world – you are the world – and the world you see is a complete reflection of you – every part of you – your heavens and your hells – and it is only you that can change how that world appears and interacts with all the other you's who populate that world.

  59. I agree that the calls for pray MAY LOOK empty and useless, especially coming from people that don’t believe in anything (?!), but the same thing can be said about the 'enlightened' call to do more for peace, in YET ANOTHER interview that sounds like the work of a groupie of the Tibetan rock-star. What does “work for peace” really means in the context of this conflict? Play soccer with your non-radical muslim neighbor? Call the friends of the Dalai (like Bono and company) to make a concert for Syria? EXPAND your consciousness to face jihadists? Vote? Protest? Go to war, bomb. kill? Deport? Chose non-agression when they blow away your family, your life? Yes, humans created this problem and humans may solve it, but how exactly? There are many possible and contradictory answers that make the slogan "work for peace" ridiculous. Jihadists, I am sure, are working for their Islamic peace. The same can be said of the American soldiers, and the Western governments, and their left and right parties, the immigrants also want their peace, like the Russians, the French now, too. Everyone is working for their view of peace. SO, WE WILL HAVE WAR.

A call for pray can be accused of insufficient, even useless, but the very same can be said of a call for “work for peace.” In the end is just CHEAP USELESS WISDOM… I really love Buddhism, but with all due respect, I think the Dalai Lama would be perfect as the next secretary general of the United Nations, if the pope don't get that position first.

  64. With all due respect to the Dalai Lama he fails to understand the main issue…we are spiritual beings in a spiritual war being deceived by spiritual beings. Yes, fallen mankind has been deceived into believing that they alone hold the answer to this problem of violence through higher conciousness (whatever that is) but scripture clearly states in Eph 6:12 "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[a] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places". Mankind, through disobedience and sin, has left the glory of the Lord and follows after many false gods believing that they hold the keys to peace. Only Jesus Christ is the answer to lasting peace and apart from Him returning to earth to establish His kingdom and once and for all destroy the powers of evil and death, we will only continue to see these terrible things come more frequently and more powerfully giving rise to the Antichrist who will fool the world into believing that he has "the answers" to world peace. It's a lie from the pit of hell and billions will believe him and choose to follow him only to their own ultimate destruction. So pray like never before to the Lord God Himself for He has said in II Chron 7:14 : "if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land."

  68. Doreen Klages Thank you. I know nothing more than the knowledge that is available to all of us and what I know is not even the size of one grain of sand. It's just that people are not looking for it and they have kept themselves indulged in petty squabbles. Why do we have the ability of speech? Why do we have a brain which has it's neurons connected to each other that resembles exactly like the structure of the Universe? Why do we have a mind that can create and handle extremely complex emotions? How is it that only we can understand and talk about science, death, God, Universe and it's creation of all the species on our planet? Because we are special and we have been gifted with extraordinary abilities meant for very few species. We are not even pausing a second to look at ourselves and admire how remarkable the creation of our self is. What we are sorely overlooking is, whoever has created us is probably watching us from somewhere and if we fail as a species, we will be failing all the efforts of our creator. Probably that's part of the grand plan of the Universe, to create, succeed or fail, continue and evolve.

  69. Stewart Mackenzie You prove the Dalai Lama's point. As Martin Luther King said: "Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love…

  75. Adam Park All the more reason for folks to know who really hold the power in their life – all the more reason for people to take responsibility for their actions and the life they live towards others. In a world where so many are in need and do not truly know how their needs can be met and their life achieving equilibrium – there has to come a time when moderation of life is made to be understood by the masses – and I am here to offer said assistance. We hold the tools to a heaven on earth and certain paradise – but life is not just about paradise – it is about accepting the positive with the negative – and in the end about knowing that all things work together for the good of the One human body or race and not just self. When we reach selflessness we come to know this.

  77. That's really funny that a.) you think I'm "uncomfortable" with the title when I'm clearly just calling out the semantics and b.) that you, of all people, think it's way over my head. You clearly don't understand the meaning or intention of my comment. "…we need more than prayer, which is very true." obviously praying doesn't solve shit but if it makes some people hopeful, or helps the healing process of their loss, or whatever it makes them feel, it's not such a bad thing. Needing more than something is very, VERY different than omitting that something. So perhaps ask yourself, do you actual understand what the Dalai Lama stands for? Or common sense/simple humanity for that matter?

  78. Islam is a fairly new religion. Was Christianity not so different ? The Knights Templar who killed anyone that did not believe in God or rather their God or the Jews or put Jesus to death for introducing Christianity via Roman hands all because they did not share the same views.
What is a view I ask you? Ones person belief into something. That is so strong ! That the person is willing to kill and die for? Can this view be corrupted by those who wish others harm? They say religion is the opium of the people.
Until the Quaran is revised there will be no peace, for the holy book is the problem it is misleading and open to many terrible misinterpretations. Those that read it will understand. Example? Like we Christians have , old , New Testament , King James Version of bible and such. Clear and precise meaning need to be set NO misinterpretations to allow for influence of young minds for hate over others.
Until that time there will be no peace.

  79. Dalai Lama understands and is speaking about the Law of Cause and Effect. That is the principle behind Karma and is the same as what Jesus said, you sow as you reap. Unfortunately we humans learn the hard way, and though our mistakes, by our own hand, we suffer. Through finding solutions, we learn and right the wrongs we have committed, and progress on our journey to enlightenment (whatever that means to you).

  85. I believe that the Dalai Lama is wrong in a sense that prayers cannot solve problems–they can–look at the movie/ book The Secret (said to be used by some of the wealthiest), with concentration and purpose one can achieve in getting whatever they desire–this sounds like a mindful meditative prayer to me. (Realizing that someone is to a percent correct about something–anything, will surely get rid of the hypocrisy we have today (everyone is a hypocrite to a point–everyone is something/ everything to a point: adrogynous, sado-masoschisic, and more) as well as other negative & positive factors; my theory is based off of everything being ambiguous.) I do believe that he hit the nail on the head, saying that JUST prayer DOESN'T work if people are not mindful enough of such (as well as willing, wanting, and other morals). And that in this current state of mind that we are in it is hard (due to adamance) to give something without believing enough in such–the first step is opening your mind to unlimited possibilities and not letting yourself go to trifles (if what you had wanted did not work out the way now–there are multiple ways out (using resources to your advantage) ). Everything comes with its pros and its cons; temptation is all around–we (literally) live in a world of temptation; it is up to the chooser to decide how much (what percentage) of pros and cons there will be (if one is mindful enough they will know when, why, how, and what shall happen, has happened, is happening). Look up remote viewing, remote influencing, and (remote audio–IDK if it's around yet, but it should be (and probably renamed); hearing something–anything–anywhere at any moment in time, if concentrated upon hard enough) #Mindfulness #MindOverMatter #PlaceboEffect #QuanitityAndQuality #WillAndWant #Accessibility #Dialectics #Dialectics #Constituency

  86. The Buddhist is the best of religious leaders, and even though his fiath is founded in the wisdom of human beings transending themselves, I fear our animal nature of conflicts with his hopeful outlook. We are creachers of instinct, and our unique rational nature is rarely engaged to potential. Struggle, conflict, war, this is what has defined us, and given the dwindiling resources for survival, I see no end to violent conficts. Perhaps our emotional desire to avoid the upcoming resource conflicts, those our most rational scientists predict, is what is hindering a resolution? If we embrace our nature, and accept our fate, there may be a chance we survive, or at least minimize the damage.

  89. Jacob Hinojos this is one the prime reasons I think God doesn't give a shit about us. If he wants us all to live great lives and be great people, why the hell are there diseases like cancer? You could say they're to punish people, but how would you punish an infant with a disfigurement or some complication with childbirth? I believe in God because of the question, "why are we here and how did we get here?" That's the only reason, everything else is up to your actions, luck, and chance.

  90. The way I see.the god complex is to evolve to the heigher self mentality.love ,compassion empathy then you will get the opportunity to understand long range interstelle enlightening communication attempts sent as Devine subliminal intervention only lightly to be noticed by a non threatening calmest evolved human psycie.
    Devine .
The past, all pasts will always need need monitoring during times of cosmosis.and long range interstella communication(conjoining planets)
Altering the specific on either side of the rrlm of the living and the dead tobpop one out the other side.this is why god or divinity in the futures ability to smite curruptt divert or distroybany threatening time line that leads to the ultimate future.
The point in time that more responsible gardian like alien life forms can reverse any time sabature attempts by life forms capable of existing as thought.
For interstella telepathy to span interstella distance during conjunctions ( see Karl sagan cosmic connection) then thought exciding the speed of light must be considered.
To alter the spacific gravity on either side of the living and the dead to pop one out the other side is to create and enpower a mental entertie living as energy and thought.the POTENTIAL TO BECOME OMNIPRESENT and a time travel sabature would not only threaten the past ,present ,future and the point in time from where all time is policed and monitored.it could distroy reality itself leaving nothing in its place like it never was.
Truly A CONCEPT ESSENTIAL OF EVOLVED ABOVE HUMAN FAWS IN RESPONSIBILITY AS THE EXISTSNCE OF REALITY FROM THIS ISVEVERYTHING TO EVERYTHING AND SO MUCH MORE.

THE BOTTOM LINE.EVIL WITCHCRAFT KNOW THIS FUTURE ABILITY TO POLICE TIME IS THANKFULLY DONE BY VERY EVOLVED RESPONSIBLE ALIEN LIFE FORMS.
THEY ,THEIR FORM THREATEN THE GOVERMENTS OF THE WORLD.EVIL WITCHCRAFT GET TO RULE THE LANDS EVEN THOUGH THEIR COSMOSIS DREW THEIR ATTENTION AND THEY ANS THE UNSUTABLE UNELECTED RULE THE LANDS AND THE WORLD.
Terrorism is a reason people could freely investigate any where at any time without drawing suspission.dragingbout these unworthy unelecteds rule at prosperitys expence is the reason terrorism will continue .
Gardians looking so alien are to eventually be understood as far less threatening to earth than terrosm, evil unelected war time rule.
The knowing cause of the threat.
The word talliban means seekers of knoleoge.
The illuminartie pretty much the same.these meglamanic oppertunists are unwilling to hand controll back easily.
    So terrorism continues.

I would stick my neck out and try to convince a planet wanting to evolve into a non threating humanity worthy of preserving instinsts and not self ditrustive enablement of human kind fatalising quicker .
The are very capable of love.
HARMONIOUS GOOD USE OF DOPEMINE RAPPORTT

one this about any unkown or intimidating future is for sure.

  93. Kevin Namendorf I think that's a valid question, what I believe is that those types of things; disease, natural disaster, etc. are symptoms of a broken world. When sin entered in to the world through man in the garden of Eden, we messed up a perfectly functioning world. Those things like cancer, birth defects, and natural disasters is the new imperfect system and the story from that point until now is God preparing humans for restoration to perfection.
