The World’s Largest Muslim Group Has Been Opposing Radical Islam for 90 Years

(ANTIMEDIAThough over one billion people in the world subscribe to the faith of Islam, every time a Muslim individual commits a violent and highly-publicized attack in the West, Americans demand unequivocal apologies and condemnations from all adherents to the religion. They cannot be bothered, of course, with the exact, same terroristic slaughter of non-whites in far-off lands.

Over and over, Islamic groups around the world condemn terrorist attacks and reiterate that violent radicals do not truly adhere to the religion. Even so, this never seems to be enough for the Fox News-inclined, who often falsely claim Muslims remain silent because they are uncivilized, violent savages. They insist ‘good’ Muslims must do more to combat extremism.

Such rhetoric, however, is increasingly, conspicuously false. One of the biggest blows to this mentality comes from Indonesia, where the largest independent Islamic organization in the world not only condemns acts of radical Islam, but has launched a massive, worldwide initiative to counter the ideology that breeds it.

Nahdlatul Ulama, or NU, was founded in 1926, and boasts 50 million members. As Huffington Post explained, it is “part Sunni religious body, part political party and part charity.” NU says its goal is “to spread messages about a tolerant Islam in their respective countries to curb radicalism, extremism and terrorism,” which the organization argues “often spring from a misinterpretation of Islamic teachings.” To do so, the group launched a global anti-extremism campaign last year.

In December of 2014, NU began building a center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to serve as its headquarters for the international project. NU is also planning “an international conference and cultural event in Washington, D.C.,” scheduled for Spring 2016, according to NU General Secretary, Yahya Cholil Staquf.

Further, NU has collaborated with the University of Vienna to create the Vienna Observatory for Applied Research on Radicalism and Extremism (VORTEX). Staquf says the aim of this project is to “produce counter-narratives against radical ideas and propagate them globally.” NU is also working on initiatives with the Swedish and British governments.

NU condemned last month’s attacks in Paris, and only weeks afterward, participated in the International Conference of Islamic Scholars’ annual forum on the “importance of promoting a peaceful Islam to combat radicalism worldwide.

The group also believes its efforts should apply “equally to local radicals” in Indonesia.

Indonesia is home to one of the most liberal Muslim populations in the world, and its constitution provides for freedom of religion. Though the government recognizes only six religions (and/or denominations) — Islam, Protestantism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Catholicism, and Buddhism — religious minorities live in general harmony.

Even so, 88% of Indonesia’s population is Muslim — and sectarian conflicts persist.

Terrorist attacks in Indonesia have increased in recent years, and multiple groups have moved to tackle the problem. The country’s leading clerical body, the Indonesian Ulema Council, which includes groups like NU, recently launched an initiative to “mobilize 50,000 preachers to spread moderate, or ‘Wasathiyah,’ Islam within Indonesia.” It has also launched a training center in the country to teach Arabic-speaking students how to counter extremist rhetoric and ideology.

Domestically and globally, NU is taking a proactive approach to curbing the proliferation of Islamic extremism. What is most relevant about its goals, however, is its condemnation of Wahhabism, a sect of Islam with roots in Saudi Arabia. Like NU, Wahhabism is derived from the Sunni sect of Islam, but their approaches could not be more different. As Huffington Post summarized:

Wahhabism is the ultra-conservative reform movement based in Saudi Arabia that advocates for puritanical laws from the time of Islam’s origins. It rejects the modern notion of ‘religion as a purely private activity’ and the separation of church and state. The Islamic State is highly committed to Wahhabi principles, using its religious textbooks and embracing its hardline tradition of killing unbelievers.

Because of Wahhabism, Saudi Arabia has been directly linked to the Islamic State, though the United States has failed to highlight this relationship, much less acknowledge the many human rights abuses its monarchical ally commits. In fact, NU was aware of the dangers of Wahhabism when the organization launched, inspired by a direct intention to counter the Saudi-linked ideology.

In light of these facts, the Western response to radical Islam seems woefully insufficient. While NU evidently seeks to strike at the root of the world’s most radical Islamic beliefs, the United States and its Western allies align themselves with the very purveyor of, and inspiration for, ISIS. High-level officials have argued that the U.S. military directly contributed to the rise of the terror group — but all the while, Western populations condemn Muslims for ‘not doing enough’ to counter this ideology.

NU’s actions run in direct conflict with this repeatedly disproved notion. The organization’s spiritual leader, A. Mustofa Bisri, has said,

The spread of a shallow understanding of Islam renders this situation critical, as highly vocal elements within the Muslim population at large — extremist groups — justify their harsh and often savage behavior by claiming to act in accord with God’s commands, although they are grievously mistaken.”

According to the Sunni view of Islam,” he added, “every aspect and expression of religion should be imbued with love and compassion, and foster the perfection of human nature.

  1. No where in the Quran there is a command to kill anyone for merely being from a different religion.. If you wanna qoute a verse, look at its context and you will find out it never commands the killing of inocents, none Muslims..

I challenge anyone, to qoute me verses WITH ITS CONTEXT that advocates the killing/harming of any non-Muslims!

  2. Julien Lemale … What I am saying is you will never find such a thing… All the verses that talks about warefare is in the form of retaliation.. The only places where the Quran tells the Muslims to fight is always in the form of self defense aganist aggression..

  4. Daniel Fontaine Yes and I'm no expert on the subject. I do have a couple of old Muslem friends who are wonderful people. It may be alot to put in context but as a retired computer systems analyst I've learned to believe that there is always a logical conclusion if you follow two rules. 1. Never say I can't. 2. Never give up. However this is not my forte' and I would like someone who's more experienced and knowlegeable to jump in here such as Assem Al Zhran or anyone!

A part of my life I considered my self an atheist When I lived in the UK, I was just like the other eating up the Bullshit of mainstream media which lead to my dissent.. Its only when I picked up a Quran and objectivly read through it.. I understood that its ment to be read and put to the test.. after all, it claims to be the word of God, it must be put to the test and be read! The first word of it is Read, I don't understand those who jump to cherry picked , out of context and self serving verses. The Quran is words, and words will mislead if it was out of context.. biggest people who believe in Such out of context Islam are IsIs and those who Acuse Islam of being Vilont.. both of those groups have the same Idology of Cherry picking vesrs to serve their intrests and leave out th3 context and the rest of the religions principles..

  7. Look, I'm not anti-Islamic, I wish there could be peaceful coexistence everywhere. But this article plays with semantics to distort the truth. The "world's largest Muslim group" is not the same as the "majority of Muslims". This group according to the article is 50 million Muslims. That's 3 percent of the 1.6 billion who follow Islam. This is a long ways short of the estimated 15 to 25 percent of Muslims that are considered radicalized….240 million at the minimum.

Look I'm happy this group exists. But there needs to be a hell of a lot more like it, if the tide of radicalization is to turned.

  8. Assem Al Zhrani I started in the computer business in 1979. For myself, I'm a Baptist but also to disabled and old to take on the subject of religion. For example I belive there are over 400 different Christian relegions. Personally speaking, I belive God is in your heart and soul and if accepted provides you with all you need to know. But the Quran, Islam, Muslem or whatever is a subject that needs maybe a young analyst like you to decifer and present to the world… The answers will not be found in fear or emotions.

  10. ISLAM ▶ Action to achieve peace ▶Individually
Islam, do not have forgiveness because all actions are predestined (will of Allah)
Islam is to purify the consciousness (pray) to accommodate the destiny.
ASTAGHFIRULLAH ▶means, "Terminate the duality and delusion"
    THAWBA▶"Terminate the present bearer" ("I")

    ALHAMDU LILLAHI RABBIYL AALAMEEN
    RABB▶means Consciousness.
This is the reason all the Dúas' are asked from Rabb (consciousness).
DÚAS' ▶( not Salawath) are never asked from Allah in Qur'an (not accepting, will of Allah)
    But "Allah" itself complete Dúa,
ALLAH ▶ "eradicate the delusion of an existent".

Foremost, you have to understand the difference between Wafath (Thawaf) and Mawth

WAFATH ▶ terminated the duality (macrocosm existent)

MAWTH ▶ terminated the present possessing (microcosm/changing into an another dream)

KABÉR ▶means, "consciousness of a Avaricious", not a grave or a tomb.

RAWLATH ▶means, where prophets and saints' bodies are kept to rest.
Whoever Wafath, do not have "KABÉR". They have eliminated the duality. RALIYALLAHU ANHU (macrocosm)

    NAFS ▶means, Ego
    ROOHU ▶means, Soul

ZIYARAH ▶ Meet. Whoever eliminates the ego, consciousness will meet the prophets and saints (reality)
As you accept the Shahada, prophets and Raliyallahu Anhus' exist in your consciousness (nothingness/Fanafi Allah/refer Surah 49:7) as macrocosm. By always asking help from them, you become closer and you will be directed….,to eradicate existent in delusion.

  14. Assem Al Zhrani If there are good Muslims. Why don't they ever condem the radicals? Most Christians condem the Klu Klux Klan, And as scary as the Klan is. ISIS is much scarier. Why don't we all just agree religion in itself is violent. Many wars fought. Many people killed in the name of some god. I have worked with many muslims. I have worked with many more christians. I choose neither. Religion was invented to control the weak minded masses. Like Santa Clause is for American children. There is no Heaven and no Hell. Hell is here. Peace comes witht he long sleep. I think we will all be sorry soon, WW3 is around the corner. We may all be speaking chinese. 🙂

  19. You should read more carefully. NU itself has 50 million members, while 88% of Indonesia's 250 million inhabitants are Muslim. That's around 220 million Muslims. As the NU, the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia is moderate, it's a safe bet that the rest of the 220 million are. I'm one of them.

Proof we're moderate: We have had a FEMALE president (and no, she didn't wear a headscarf). We have had a transgender woman (born a man, underwent sex change operation) as one of our most famous celebrities. Mixed religion marriages (Muslims with Christians, for example) are perfectly legal. We have a madrassa (religious school) for transgender people. Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, and Confucian religious holidays are national holidays. The capital's governor is a Chinese Christian. We have ads for condoms on TV.

Pretty progressive for a Muslim majority country, right? Surprised? Blame the mainstream media.

  22. the problem is there is evil sabbateans who have infiltrated all religions and it is their intention to destroy all people who believe in anything but satan and evil.. so be careful what you like when you see strangers enter into your understanding and also be careful what you were taught because myself being raised a catholic i found out later how evil it was and then i joined a few different evangelical churches and also found they were really controlled by evil people who are these sabbateans and recently i found out these sabbateans have infiltrated muslim relgions and jewish religions and hindu religions etc etc and their evil has been planned for many hundreds of years as they have helped to formulate all the holy books of all those religions and so they have set it up to make all those religions think their messaiah or God or whatever you want to call them that he or she etc is coming back and ironically they all are coming back at the same time.. that is planned by evil to deceive us simple people as they will put on a show soon and oh so many will bend down in praise of something that is false and not true.. .. do not be deceived.. there will be a false anti christ and a false messiah and a false savior and a false muslim messiah as these evil people who are in powerful positions around the world will soon attempt to take over the whole world by use of control of the three major religions.. muslims christian and jews and try to make everyone turn to their false evil god .. listen to your heart for we all are given truth by our creator and let him guide you in all truth because the deception is coming and it will be so big it will deceive the most common of people except for the few who will stay true to the creator who speaks to our hearts minds and souls.. our creator world is not of here so when you hear a false leader / messiah say we shall have peace on earth and safety know he is the great deceiver.. look to the place where we shall all spend eternity above in true peace and love because while we were here will lived in true peace and love amen

The majority of Muslims smile quitely after every terrorize attack on their Infidels.

They practice takiya – TAKIYA: The Koran commanded intentional lying to Infidels to make them believe you are a peace loving Muslim.

You need to at least provide links and probably provide quoted examples of such inflammatory words. Further, we shouldn't care what the Fox news-inclined say, but what Fox news itself says. You use a cheap guilt by association trick. Once again, i'm not not a fan of fox news; I just care about facts and good arguments.

  33. Ronnie Moore Ok this is a good question and it needs some details along with to give a full answer, so here it is:
A fundamental principle that every good Muslim should adopt as commanded by our prophet (Phub) and the Quran is the principle of (Struggle) Meaning, A Muslim should struggle in the way of God. For example, if a Muslim takes good care of his old parents then he is doing a great deed and struggling to do so, that is considered (Struggling) in the way of God, And the same goes for a college kid trying to secure an honest future, he is also (struggling) in the way of God..
One of the biggest forms of (Struggle) is to fight for the word of God, and that include through deluge when someone speaks wrongfully about the Quran or Mohammed… And the highest form of that is to struggle physically when the time requires you to do so, like fighting off an invasion or to fight to prevent an imminent attack.
Now let me translate the word Struggle to Arabic, It is جهاد = Jihad.. You see now how this word is so misrepresented?
Muslims are only commanded to engage in Physical Jihad is against a physical threat.. What the terrorists did in Charlie Hebdo is merely cowardness and has nothing to do with Jihad.

  41. you need to know more muslims and first know the meaning of the word "Islam" . Second you need to know who supports terrorist organizations such Alqaeda or Isis because most of muslims do not support them. Also you have to read the "war" diciplines in Islam (To not kill old man, woman, child, or non fighter man – to not cut a tree or kill an animal except for eating – You can not force people to become muslems – do not demolish a church or a temple) all this in case of war so you can imagine when there is no war. At the end; just for your knoledge all the people were killed in islamic wars during 1400 years are less than the people died in second world war or the original citizins in the usa by non muslims. So, you can not accuse islam.

Many moslim people I know are the most peacefull, openminded people. Stop taking down their religion because of the extremist. The bible is also full of fear and terror. Read all books before you judge. As most religious people live for love.

  43. Assem Al Zhrani History proves you wrong!

Takiya for self-PROTECTION AND Takiya for deception and killing are TWO different things.

A young Muslim named Muhammad bin Maslama volunteered, but with the caveat that, in order to get close enough to Kab to assassinate him, he be allowed to lie to the poet. Muhammad agreed.

Other prominent ulema, such as al- Qurtubi , al-Razi, and al-Arabi have extended taqiyya to cover deeds. Muslims can behave like infidels – from bowing down and worshipping idols and crosses to even exposing fellow Muslims' "weak spots" to the infidel enemy – anything short of actually killing a fellow Muslim.

  45. Respect for the Fallen. Dear friend. Why Islam should condemn those violent attacks perpetrated by some guys? Let me explain myself about this. When "France attacks" happened, some people I knoiw told ME that I have to condemn them. Why? The killers aren't my people, neither the French. Am I guilty because someone grabs a weapon and kills "in the name of Islam"?
Just to explain it in a different way, and have my respect upfront. I see your picture and I understand it's you, a Black man (I know northamericans prefer to be called afro-americans, I am not trying to insult at all). Ok, This last weekend a Black man, in a tube station in London decided to grab a knife and harm some passers. He yielded "This is for Syria". Can you tell me where or how can that be considered a Muslim? Well, somebody replied him back "You are not Muslim bruv". Now let me ask you something. What would happen if I decide (and the Media supports me) to say "all blacks are violent. They are all thugs". Would you consider that fair? Even if I don't. Do you feel you have to apologise in fron of the whole World because another black guy decided to do a stupid violent thing? I personally don't think so.You might be an engineer, a doctor, a father, a gansgter, an officer, an electrician….. or I don't know what, but I am sure you are not responsible of any act perpetrated by any other black guy. Agree? Well. The terrorists in France never went to mosque, never read Qur'an, never prayed, they used to drink alcohol and do drugs, they even had a bar shut by authorities because it was related to drugdealing. But you know what? The had name they sound arabic and people link that to ISLAM. Do you really think I have to apologise because of these acts? I was at home working that night when that incident happened. Why people poit at me and demand me to "apologise"?
One last comment. If that would be like that, then if there is any violent part of the world, that would be US-Europe, as no ideology or religion has committed more genocides than them.
Or another question: Why everyone talks about WW2 and only speak about the Holocaust against Jews? I am not disrespecting them, but during WW2 60million people died. 58million were civilians. The world only honours "6"? Why? Salam brother

  47. The Koran itself is clearly the root of the violence we have today as well as, the historical violence that went hand in hand with Islam.

Importantly, Mohammed's example was one of incredible violence without any doubt.

Fortunately many interpret those passages quoted so often, (such as Surah 9:5), as pertaining to ancient times but, since the Koran gives no specifics, it comes off as an open command to so many others. (Is it not the Hadiths that give historical context?)

Someone said, "What about the Bible? Doesn't it also call for violence?"

The answer is that it gives specific times, places and people who were entrenched in child sacrificial practices, that God called on Israel to carry out His judgment uponm

(In fact, when they did not kill all those enemies, they later wound up being heavily involved in child sacrifice themselves.)

Islam has never had a reformation that Christianity is famed for. That us why no one in these times from the People of the Book practice 5th century customs.

One cannot escape the fundamental determination espoused by the Qua'ran: that of ridding of and/or subjugation the world of infidels as opposed to the policy of forgiveness prothlesized by the New Testament. The moral character of these ideologies are juxtaposed. Period. Handle it.

Now get ready, because Islam won't lay its self-rightious, Jew/Christian/infidel judgmental killing sword down until Islam subjugates the world and Jehoweh's Children won't back down from the forgiveness policy of determined Justice, non-bifucated by the rightious ability to differentiate between good and evil. It is why the Children of the Book are even mentioned by Mohamed, knowing damn well the rightious story of it, and why we can see the moral benchmark of the difference between killing and murder, unlike mad Moslems that kill innocent children, crucifying dogs, cats and helpless people with self-rightious impunity. Because we endlessly see that difference , we know the evil in Islam will self destruct. We shall assist in that Destiny.

  61. Assem Al Zhrani When studying the Qu'ranic narratives you will find that there are several themes. Most of them are not benign nor beneficial to a pluralistic life style. The Qu'ran promotes segregation, psychological grouping motifs, an us-versus-them psychology that demeans anything outside of the ummah, an extremely negative view on women, degrading non-Muslims and of course a very violent streak. I can see from your replies that you have either not studied the Qu'ranic narratives and are just fipping verses or are somehow trying to promote a view of the Qu'ran to uninformed readers that is simply incorrect.

  63. The Christian Reformation was not about theologogy but dogma and foremost a fight against the institution of the Catholic Church. What came out of the reformation has been a dark episode in Europe as it was some of the most oppressive and nasty dogma. Conservatism is what the reformation brought. But the theology is still the same, every Christian Church still uses the same doctrines, it's just wrapped differently. Reformation only brings schism, and schism only brings about violence and sectarianism, of which Islam already has enough.

As for our friend Mohamed, he should know better. Islam is the religion in which God sees his flock of believers as slaves. Where slave to allah is an honorary title bestowed by God to the most pious. Where all is predestined, where one should fight until all are under Allah. It is not friendly, it is not a set of good morals to live by.

Koran, 8:12. How do they dissacciate themselves from radical Islam when the preachings of this are in the Qua'rn, their holy book that they follow? If you have a Bible, read the book of 1 john. BEING A CHRISTIAN IS ALL A BOUT HAVING YOUR WALK MATCH YOUR TALK. GOD IS LOVE, and those who follow Him are to LOVE, FORGIVE OTHERS, Serve Others, & Be Kind & Respectful. THAT'S THE TEST!! WHOEVER SAYS THEY LOVE GOD ARE TO LOVE OTHERS ALSO!

Sharonneke Boz, I don't know what you're referring to as Christians committing child abuse worldwide. I've been a Christian for 45 years & keep informed, & I have never heard of this. I DO know that Mohammed killed or had killed 1000's of people who would not convert to his beliefs & that he raped women, enslaved children for sexual purposes, was a polygamist, was a warloard. His writings are full of hatred & violence. He did NOT teach to love your neighbor as yourself.

I agree there are many, many Muslims who live peaceful lives, but why they associate themselves with Mohammed & his teachings is beyond me. It just doesn't add up.

Not to mention the reformation of the church between now and then. So you Christian Crusader argument really has no point…. By the way. How come all other religions can get along with each other.
