Trump’s Pick for Energy Secretary Is on DAPL Company’s Board of Directors

(ANTIMEDIA) President-elect Donald Trump ran on the promise that he would “drain the swamp” of corruption in Washington D.C., but now, it appears he’s simply refilling it with oil. It’s now being reported that Trump has chosen former Texas Governor Rick Perry to head the nation’s energy policy as secretary of energy.

There are a few reasons why concerned citizens might question this decision. First, Rick Perry sits on the board of directors of Energy Transfer Partners, the oil company that is building the widely-opposed Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). This is a gross conflict of interest. This news comes just days after another Big Oil Trump pick was announced: ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson for secretary of state.

If you’ve been on social media in the last few months, you’ve probably heard about the DAPL. It’s a controversial pipeline that runs through several states and is opposed by Native Americans, who say it will threaten their drinking water and their sacred ancestral treaty-guaranteed lands. It’s also opposed by landowners who had their farms, ranches, and yards taken from them through the use of eminent domain (see: government-sanctioned theft). Also in the fray are environmental activists who have supported Native Americans in their efforts to block the pipeline.

The #NoDAPL movement gained international prominence after militarized police brutally cracked down on the peaceful protests, injuring and arresting hundreds of people and brutalizing independent journalists. (See all of our DAPL coverage here.)

Second, former Governor Rick Perry is also known to be a bumbling fool that one could argue isn’t qualified to be secretary of anything, let alone the nation’s energy policy. In fact, when Perry was running for president in 2012, he actually said he would completely do away with the Department of Energy — the same agency he’s about to be in charge of. The only problem was he couldn’t remember the name of the agency when he tried to tout this policy in a presidential debate. Oops! Watch the clip below:
