US Government Is Taking Credit For Bringing Peace to Syria — and They’re Not Joking

Spokesperson John Kirby’s annual roundup included controversial “success stories.”

(COMMONDREAMSState Department spokesperson John Kirby is raising eyebrows after he released a recap of 2015 “success stories” in which he credits the United States for bringing “peace” and “security” to Syria and “stepping up” to help the country’s people at a difficult time.

“The United States and many members of the international community have stepped up to aid the Syrian people during their time of need,” wrote Kirby in his laudatory year-in-review released late last week. He went on to claim that “the United States has led the world in humanitarian aid contributions since the crisis began in 2011.”

“Led by Secretary Kerry, the United States also continues to push for a political transition in Syria, and under his stewardship, in December, the [United Nations] Security Council passed a U.S.-sponsored resolution that puts forward a roadmap that will facilitate a transition within Syria to a credible, inclusive, nonsectarian government that is responsive to the needs of the Syrian people,” the report continued.

Using the hashtag #2015in5words to highlight last year’s wins, Kirby boasted: “Bringing Peace, Security to Syria.”

Kirby’s claims of victory did not go unnoticed, with Foreign Policy reporter David Francis writing on Monday: “When it comes to Syria, ‘peace’ and ‘security’ might not be the best choice to describe what the United States delivered there in 2015.”

And indeed, a roundup of empirical evidence paints a far more bleak picture.

The United Nations Security Council reported in August that the Syrian conflict has now killed 250,000 people and displaced 12 million. According to a report released by the UN’s Relief and Works Agency in March, more than 80 percent of Syrians were living in poverty in 2014.

What’s more, despite the role of U.S. military intervention in fueling the rise of ISIS and conflict in Syria and Iraq, the American humanitarian response is severely lagging. The United States has admitted just 1,854 Syrian refugees since 2012, and according to the administration of President Barack Obama, 10,000 will be resettled next fiscal year.

This compares with 2.1 million Syrian refugees registered by the UN in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon; 1.9 million Syrians registered by Turkey; and nearly 30,000 in North Africa. All of these numbers are likely low, as many refugees do not register.

Further, these numbers fall well below calls for the U.S. to resettle at least 100,000 Syrian refugees in the coming year, with some demanding open borders at a time of dramatic human displacement.

In addition, many have argued that U.S. aid donations are dismally inadequate, given the country’s status as the biggest economy in the world.

While aid falls short, U.S. intervention continues to escalate—despite warnings that there is no American military solution.

According to the calculations of journalist Chris Woods, November 2015 “saw the greatest number of Coalition actions yet reported in the 16-month war,” with the U.S. and allies conducting 232 bombings in Syria, as well as 529 in Iraq. And earlier this month, the United States announced it is deploying more special operations forces to Iraq, where they will be given license to operate unilaterally in neighboring Syria.

Meanwhile, a report released by Amnesty International earlier this month found that ISIS has formed a formidable arsenal, in part thanks to large stockpiles of U.S. weapons seized from Iraqi forces and Syrian opposition.

Kirby’s declaration of “success” in Syria was not, however, the only controversial claim in his annual roundup. Also included under the hashtag #2015in5words were “Protecting Arctic Climate and Communities” and “Open Door to Free Trade.”

  1. The great Satan: America needs to be seen as the good guy once again, because we really are the good guys; we have just been living too much in our heads, and we have gotten lost.

Have it all: America now is the most materialistic and least spiritual country in the world. When Americans learn the ultimate truth, they will become the most spiritual country almost over night. We will have it all, material and spiritual, and we will be in a position to give it all to the rest of the world, and we will.

Once we start being who we really are, we will not have any problems, only solutions.

We are the leaders of the world. We have to start leading in the right direction. People in the world are looking at us and wondering if we are the great Satan as some people are saying, or if we are an angel that will save the world. It is time to show them the truth. We are an angel that is going to save everyone we can.

Help ourselves: Before we help the rest of the world, we have to help our own country. We should concentrate our resources on straightening out our own country first to build a model for the rest of the world to see and follow.
First, help yourself spiritually, then America, then the rest of the world.

If the people of the world see us doing the right thing and how it is benefiting us, they will want to be like us. They will see what we do, because worldwide communication will make that possible. We just have to make sure the leaders of their country are not stopping the truth from getting to them.

I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crises. The great point is to bring them the real facts. Abraham Lincoln

The news lately has focused on Mexicans illegally coming across our southern borders and using our education and medical system. We do not like that, so we are planning to build a big, expensive wall to try and stop them and do all sorts of things to make their pitiful lives even worse than they are. It will not work, and in the long run, it will cost us more than helping them costs us now. Doesn’t the Statue of Liberty invite everyone to come here?

It says, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

We should remove the invitation and statue if people are no longer welcome. Instead of seeing how we can make those poor peoples’ lives worse, shouldn’t we do the opposite and see how we can make their lives better? The problem is that their country is so corrupt and disorganized that they cannot live a decent life there. That is the real problem. We should either help them change things in their country, or let them come to ours.

Everyone should go to downtown Tijuana and then go to downtown San Diego a few miles away. You will see one of the worst places and one of the best places on earth. It is an outrage. Mexico could be a beautiful place. The weather is better than it is here, and the cost of living is much lower. If the place were not so corrupt, they would have to build a fence to stop Americans from going south.
We have to learn that the better other people do, the better we do.

We want everyone in the world to do better and make more money, because it will come back to us. Half of the human race is very poor and lives on less than two dollars a day. If we just doubled that, they would have double the money to spend. They would live better, and they would spend double the money they are now spending, doubling the value of the economy of half the world. Prosperity will create prosperity, if we wake up to the truth.

Work creates something out of nothing. If you build a house, you have a house where you did not before. Making things better, makes them better.

That work benefits the people the work is done for, the people doing the work, and generates more money and more work. Work makes things better, which is why the work is done in the first place, to fix something or make it better. You cannot get too many workers; it is a delusion.

A rising tide lifts all boats.
    John F. Kennedy

The government’s job will be to keep everyone productive. They will help create enough good jobs to keep everyone busy and earning enough money to live well.
Whenever people start doing more work, things always start getting better.

Poverty/ignorance/corruption: Because of poverty, ignorance and corruption in the third world, the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer, and this will doom the human race, rich and poor alike.

The truth is, all people can be treated fairly, and spiritual people would do it.

  5. Chuckz Morales you missed the point of the post. I don't disagree with most of what you just posted, with the exception of the bigotry part. There certainly is bigotry in American, but Most Americans are not bigots. The point of the post is America is the leader of the World right now – that is un-deniable. And if we are going to change this world to be the peaceful place we all want it to be, Americans have to pull there head out of their … sand and wake up to everything you just said. If you go to the website I posted you will see what I mean, a way for all of us to wake up and see the Truth… Btw, thanks for taking the time to respond to my post. Have a good one brother!

  8. Chuckz Morales our country and economy has been saved by undocumented illegals. Yeah right! you live in a biggoted
dream world dude. Your world is where you call everyone a biggot then make a bunch of racist statements yourself.. this is the Mexican myth that our country will starve if we stop the illegals from coming in. . No bigger lie could be told . It's actually the opposite Your world is where you call everyone a biggott then make a bunch of racist statements yerself. You have a lot to learn. Let's just take one little peek at the history of your great country Mexico: what did they do in World War 2 for the cause of freedom in the world for the cause of freedom when there were hundreds of millions of people dying? While hundreds of millions of people are dying what were the Mexicans doing? Nothing 0 deaths in fact Roosevelt basically had bribe Mexican president Camacho to stay on the side of the Allies and not join Hitler.
